I don't know if Dylan wants my help, if he does he can post here and let me know.
'
I think he has done a good job, working with the tools he has, and by that I mean the essential quality of the technique he has developed. I believe he has taken it as far as he will be able to using the technique he has, and I think he has realized that which is why he decided to end the posts.

It is very important to realize that unless our technique is built on a solid foundation, there is no possibility of doing certain things to a level of perfection. Technique can be compared to a bridge built to bear a heavy load. If you try to drive a 10 ton truck over a bridge that can only handle 5 tons, you will soon be trying to keep your head above water.

When players put certain demands on their technique that it cannot actually bear, they also get that "struggling to keep my head above water" feeling. So, the answer to the question "how long does it take a beginner to master this piece" depends on the piece, and the beginner. For some pieces, it will be "never", in other words, they are not beginner pieces, the beginner must develop a bit beyond the beginner stage.

Best,
Jamie
www.guitarprinciples.com

Well jase, I don't know how long you have been playing, what standard you are at now or what songs you have been trying to play, but everyone has to learn at their own pace.

3 years now and very much progressing at the slower end. I'm beyond being a beginner in some aspects but if we were talking about Lead or fingerpicking then I would definately class myself as a beginner still
Look at 'beginners videos' and see how long it actually takes 'real' beginners to learn the art of playing guitar - let me just say that I have seen 'beginners' that seem to start playing at intermediate level

I must say I've been amazed by quite a few on youtube who even after a year look like theyve been playing for 5 years.
kenrogers2 wrote:
I have my own Beatle's pursuit going on.
I gave up on Norwegian Wood way back . . .
but now I'm taking a stab at it again . . .

Which leads me back again to my earlier post about giving up or becoming bored with a song and then returning later to it and finally cracking it. If a guitar teacher said to me "were going to try and learn a certain song for the next 4 weeks but we wont perfect it but might go back to it 1 day" I would think what a waste of time, yet left to my own devices thats sometimes what I'm doing. Now after 3 years of learning there are plenty of "easy songs" out there that I can learn in a short space of time before getting bored. I dont use a different method for songs I fail to learn or songs I actually learn to play. I'm just wondering is this how we all learn songs or is there another way?

Dylan, I'm going to leave it at that now or the thread will go off topic but I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress.

Well jase, I don't know how long you have been playing, what standard you are at now or what songs you have been trying to play, but everyone has to learn at their own pace. Ok, some lucky folks who don't have to work full-time (or at all) can dedicate all their spare time (once their finished their household chores) to playing their guitar and make quicker progress.

Others, like me are lucky enough to have a job where I can keep my guitar beside me during the day and if I have a spare ten minutes I can pick it up and practice or play. Some folks have a full days' work and have to spend time with the family when they get home and get frowned at if their hand strays too close to their six-string...

Look at the last four videos I've made over the last four weeks, look at the tabulature, listen and read the instructions....Is this something you think you could do? Quicker, slower, never? There are plenty of lessons in the beginners and intermediates that you could have fun with. Plenty of strumming tunes as well - you can find them online if you want.

Look at 'beginners videos' and see how long it actually takes 'real' beginners to learn the art of playing guitar - let me just say that I have seen 'beginners' that seem to start playing at intermediate level - if I thought I should be achieving that after my first six months, I would probably have given up...

I for one would like to see (or hear) someone else's version of this lesson and hear from them how long it has taken them to learn and how long they have actually been playing the guitar. I've read that folks can get a tune down in a couple of days - lucky them - let's hear it!

Rock on!
D 8)

Not so much not improving but more the slow rate that it happens at. I think I miss out on not having a teacher who probally could advise on more suitable songs for my ability. I think alot of the songs I've attempted in the past were beyond my ability at the time and probally doomed to failure before I even began.
