As an experiment, try keeping your thumb on the side of the pick-up. I find that it keeps my plucking consistent over all strings. That bass sounds very good! On the song, it seems it is a simplified version of the original Jamerson's bass line. I also played a different, reduced version. The second part, after the chorus, is very complex in the original. Jamerson was a amazing player.
