The use of mandolins and stuff, that predates The Band too, doesn't it? Either way, these guys went to uncharted places and came up with some hits anyhow. I only ever owned Gasoline Alley, but it was great - and great to jam along to now that I think of it.

Hey, OT, The Kinks were pretty ahead of their time too in that hard rock sense - You Really Got Me. Quite the wild, overdriven, riff-oriented, well-crafted rock single.

Back OT: good job Vic and Stu! With a couple of more mics you can record everything; even switch on your drum machine, and add bass later.

Faces. almost ahead of their time. what with the mandos and slides they almost foreshadowed the counrty songs written in the early 70's from Neil Young to Graham Parsons.
Gasoline Alley by Rod Stewart and most of the Faces was an early favorite. it stood out from the other generic rock n roll albums.

Ronny Laine almost is too wishy washy or vaporous for me. dreamy stuff for the time. again, not the usual radio stuff.
I liked him. there is a neat album with Laine and Townsend called 'Rough Mix'. I cant find it today. I feel the same way about Traffic. LOL, Dogbite, you DID post a reply - in the other thread! Yeah, I wish the Faces'd kept going - they were criticised for being loose and sloppy, but the guys ROCKED! Some great singles - they seemed to save the real rockers for the Faces, and the more mellow stuff for Rod's solo albums.....I was a big fan of the Small Faces too, Ronnie Lane and Kenny Jones were a great rhythm section, and McLagan was an excellent keyboard player.
