We used to use fastforward tape when doing foley for video post. You just have to be careful of your levels and make sure your not using the speaker outs from the reel to reel. Where is your studio? Not many home recorders have 15 mics to play with. I think it's obvious you have a good amount of experience. Likely more than most here and probably more than myself. Not comsumer tape decks let your monitor the output during
fast forwarding and rewinding why is that?

This is a "scrub" function. In the "old" days when we used to edit tape with a razor, we might need to listen to the tape while fast forwarding to get to the next spot we want to edit as quickly as possible.

Tape speed in general is a whole different story. Thinkof tape speed as sample rate. The more samples per second, the better the resolution so, the faster the tape the better the sound.

You want a tape loop? What you need to do is make a continuous loop of tape Just long enough to keep tension between the two reels. So basically you want a long peice of tape spliced together end to end. You can vary the length of the delay by controlling the tape speed and by lengthening the tape though you will need to find a way to keep the tension. (You will want the machine to be monitoring from tape and not input. ) I think this is what you are talking about. I could be wrong. You can even do this with cassettes though it's a bit of a challenge to get the cassette back together once you've taken it apart. Make sure you use a cassette that's screwed together.
