Don't overlook the fact that he's driving them with a real power amp (Dynaco by David Hafler) -- an area where the Altec PC speaker's will be comparitively deficient. This can make quite a difference, especially in the distortion and tightness of bass.

I've been getting into recording some of my guitar playing and vocals. Now have added a keyboard to the mix. I went from a cheap dynamic mic connected straight to the mic in of my computer sound (AC97 onboard sound) to my current setup: Behringer UB802 mixer, Audio Technics condenser mics (AT2041 SP pair; 1 large diaphragm and 1 small diaphragm), M-Audio 2496 soundcard, Behringer 1C passive monitors (using a Dynaco amp for power; these monitors blew me away for the price of $70 CAD, compared to my Altec Lansiq computer speaker at 3 times the price). This is a varyily inexpensive setup; about $400 CAD. Without a doubt I'm extremely pleased with the quality sound of my recordings; artiscally that is another story (I know things will improve in time). I definitely think this is a very good setup for the hobbyist that wants to delve into the recording world. I'm currently using Kristal and Audacity for software (free). They so far meet my needs.
So from perspective this meagre amount of cash layout can produce very good quality recordings.
