I think Greybeard says that probably you activated the mic in your laptop and you have a problem of feedback.

Are you using Windows? There is a dialog in the Control Panel where do you can see what input is selected.

Sometimes, the program that you are using for recording has an access to that configuration as well. Are you using Audacity perhaps?

Did you install any software these days? however, since then and previously to then, i have not been able to record anything without a huge HISS which drives me NUTS!!

i plug straight into the mc input or line input through a pod 2.0. - why can i not get rid of the VERY LOUD DRIVING ME MAD HISS!!!!
is there a way to plug into the usb to record? would that help the hiss??
