Well if you're going to get a Marshall 990 or a Behringer B1 you might as well save up a few more bucks and get a TB1 Â from Studio Projects they're about $300 bucks canadaian so that's about $200 US, but They're worth it. It's pretty tough to find a tube mic at that price. I've got a Studio Projects B1 that sounds great when I use it in conjunction with a Behringer ultragain 100 tube preamp. That combo is about $150 US. I'm sure the behringer B1 and the Ultragain 100 would sound as good together as well. I've heard some bad things about the lower end Marshall mics but some of the newer tube mics they have are supposed to sound quite nice. Â Whatever you do don't put one of those condensors in front of your amp. Unless you intend to blow your investment right away. AKGs arent that far out of reach anymore either. I saw a stereo matched pair of c414's for just over a grand. Nice! You might also want to look into Audio Technica's stuff. They're a reliable name and are a little more attainable in price.

As for the MOTU, eventually I would love to work my way up to a system like those.  It's just a money issue right now.

On a totaly different note, I'm in need of good low priced condensor mics. Would you recomend either the behringer b1 or marshall mxl 990? I'm needing a versitile microphone that will do a good job on both vocals and accoustic guitars. Should I just forget about low priced mics and go with something like an akg or a shure?

It depends really on how far you plan to take your audio. Do you plan to record 12-24 tracks at a time? It might be better to go with a Hammerfall card but if all you are going to do at best is up to 10 tracks at a time you would probably be ok with an M-Audio Delta 1010. The Hammerfall seems to be the higher end card but M-Audio's A/D converters are pretty good. Given the choice I would probably go with neither and get a MOTU system. More expensive but also far more practical in a multitracking environment. There's also the reliability factor. There's nothing like a dedicated recording machine where you don't have to worry about crashes or internal interferance from your network card or video adapter. No software compatability issues..... anyway back to the topic. If you don't plan on micing every drum on the kit go with M-Audio. If you are, go with Hammerfall.
