I tried what mikespe suggested one of the drives I updated had to do with IDE and i had the burner back and lost it again when trying to burn. I don't know to much about drives but i'll try the net. The thing about the computer being hot is possible although I don't use the burner enough to burn it out but I do leave my computer running all the time. I'll shut down tonite.

Purchasing a new burner? this may sound dumb but would that be a piece of hardware or software. Can you buy hardware and connect it to your computer? I also see just software which may not help if I have a system problem

This could be a heat issue as previously suggested...try burning a cd when the computer is cold and see what happens. It could also be loose cables so check all your cables going to the burner (you have to open the case to do this). One other thing to try is to completely uninstall the burner (uninstall the drivers AND the cables...turn the computer OFF to take the cables off) reboot the computer to make sure it is uninstalled then shut down again. Hook the cables back up again and turn the computer on. OH by the way...you never said what operating system you are using (Windows XP, ME, 2000?). Windows XP should recognize the burner and install it...keep the drivers handy...you'll need them.

Connecting a new burner is dead easy. The old burner will have two or maybe three connections. There is a power connector, which has 4 comparatively thick wires and a white plastic connector. You can't get this wrong, because two corners are bevelled.
Next is the IDE cable, which is usually wide and flat, with the outside wire of one side marked with red. That is connector 1, which has to be correctly connected to the new burner - the instructions will tell you which way round it should be connected.
The last, if it has one, is the sound connector, so that you can play cds directly to the sound card. You just need to make sure you note which way round the wires are - it won't harm anything, you'll just get the channels crossed, if you connect it up wrongly.
The burner is, physically, held in place by 4 screws. Just unscrew them, pull the old burner out, through the front, push the new burner into the slot. Before fixing it in place, connect all the cables, then screw into place. Install the new software and you're away.
