Im not an expert but I actually was in the market until recently for some home recording equiptment. I was planning on getting a mixer but ended up getting with a USB audio interface. (http://www.tascam.com/Products/US-122.html) It cost me about $320 (Australian)

This might be relevant for you because laptops generally have pretty shoddy soundcards, so with a USB interface you can bypass the internal soundcard altogether. They are also pretty small and portable and dont require any power sockets or extra cable as it runs itself and any mic phantom power you might need via the USB power in the laptop.

Anyway, just a thought. If you already have a mixer you were thinking of using then yes, plugged into the back of the soundcard it will do the job also. But if you are looking to buy something new to do this job, i thought it might be something worth considering.
