I got a TASCAM 424 MkIII at one point, then found a TASCAM 238S Syncaset 8-track on eBay. Recorded a LOT with that one.

There's bunches of 4 track cassette machines around like at musiciansfriend.com, but the prices of the little 4-track digital units have come down quite a bit - in the same range of the 424 when I got it a few years back. You may not have to go to computer recording totally, but digital would be cool if you can get it.

Here's some stuff from that store just for reference:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/rec/navigation/multi-track-recorders?N=100001+304739

Best regards

Even the 4-tracks with the standard or selectable speeds have a different head/track layout than regular cassette players. In other words all four tracks are recorded in the same direction, whereas on a commercial deck, tracks 1 and 3 go in on direction (Side A), and tracks 2 and 4 go in the other (Side B). If you played a tape recorded on one of the multitracks you're talking about, you'd hear only track 1 and 3 and if you flipped the tape over you're hear 2 and 4 backwards.

To get around this, record on your multitrack using the fastest speed available, then dub it out onto a regular cassette deck.

Or download Audacity onto your computer and record digitally.

Hope this helps.

ive never done any recording, and ive decided to start with an inexpensive 4 track cassette machine. ive seen several different models online ranging from about 150 USD to just below a hundred. from what ive read about them, some of them dont record using the 'standard' speed. its important to me that im able to record with my 4 track and listen to the tape on a standard tape deck. can anyone here please let me know which models you know of that will allow me to do that?
i'd also love opinions on machines you guys have had experience with. thanks!
