This is ultimately long term what I want to do. As for amps my thought was to get the amp you stated (Crate V16 Palomino Tube Amp ) and use the multi effects I mentioned. I still think it wouldnt be a bad idea to get some individual pedals to mess around with.

Thanks Wes and others. I think you've all steered me towards some good decisions.
geoo

The Crate is probably a lot bigger than you think. But let me tell you something. It is great to have a big Marshall stack on stage, looks really impressive. But it is no fun at all hauling that cab up a flight of stairs, or even loading it in a car or truck. Gets old REAL quick.

I go to see bands all the time. You will still see big stacks on stage, but nowadays most guitarists use a small 1 X 12 combo and mic it into the PA. And many times you do not even need to mic it.

What I'm trying to say is that size is not important. :D

I have a story similar to Moonrider's. I used to take my little 1958 Premier Twin 8 amp to a local Open Mic. This amp is very small, about 5 watts, and weighs 10 lbs. at most. But it has great tone and will blow your mind with a good overdrive or distortion pedal into it. I would take this tiny amp on stage and actually sit it on a folding chair. It probably looked comical. I brought a mic stand and mic, mic'd the amp into the PA. There was a good crowd that night, my little Premier probably looked silly with all the bigger amps on stage. That is until I fired it up. You should have seen people's expressions. They were dumbstruck. This little amp ROCKS. A little later a well known local guitarist came in and wanted to get up and play. Guess who's rig he wanted to use? Yep, mine. And he got up there and made my little amp scream.

So, of course you want an amp that looks good on stage. But more important is an amp that sounds great. Funny thing, a tiny amp that sounds awesome seems very big on stage. :D

You could always go with some of the more popular gigging amps like the Hot Rod Deluxe or Peavey Classic 30. These are great amps with good tone and plenty of power for any club. And they are fairly portable as well, around 50 lbs.

Then if you like lots of effects then just use a multi-efx pedal like the Boss you talked about into one of these amps. This is what many gigging guitarists do today.

FYI, the AD30VT does not support the fancier footswitch.

Ahh Thanks for the bit of info. Apparently my local shop didnt know that either.

Well, the money for this was again pushed back again but not too far. I had to loan a friend some money but I'll get to go shopping around Sept 15th for what I want. Until then I have been looking at a Squier Master Series M-80 and the Vox VR15 or something similar to tide me over until the real shopping day. I think I can get into this for about 300, which I have.

After much discussion here my current Sept plans are for

Schecter C1 Classic (Blue)
Hard case (Same one MIke got)
Digitech GNX4 Guitar Workstation (I love the sound of the special effects and it has built in looper and a built in drum machine. Also has some effects I would like to play with)
A still undetermined AMP (If I need one)

I'll probably get the few pedals that I want as seperate pedals (Chorus, distortion, etc) and use them when I dont want to dink with the GNX4 or whatever. That might be over kill. I dunno. But I was already wanting a drum machine and looper so I could use it for practice.

I dont mind going all out because this is a reward to myself to meeting a very important goal. I am still not sure what amp but I am leaning towards a basic LOUD tube amp. Maybe the one Wes mentioned.

Keep the suggestions coming if you think of anything or spot stupidness on my part. Its always welcomed.

Geoo

FYI, the AD30VT does not support the fancier footswitch. That works with I think the 60 and 120VTX models, which allows you to save many more patches. The footswitch for the AD30VT can switch between ch1 and ch2 (two patches) and turn the effects on or off.

Also, generally I have found the effects on that box to be much better than the effects on my Zoom 707 GFX pedal..but there are only a few combinations of effects available.

Pull up a chair and let me tell ya a story son. . .

One of my favorite amps is my Vox VR15, which is a hybrid style amp - tube preamp and solid-state poweramp. It's a *great* sounding amp, and is usually the one I grab when I'm headed out to play any type of informal jam, and half the time for band practice. It's also *tiny*, and is absolutely dwarfed by my Hot Rod Deluxe, and my Peavey Duel 212.

Welp the drummer for the band hosted a jam session in the practice room. I grabbed the Vox, headed over there, and set up next to one of the guest guitarists and his *full* Marshall (AVT100H) stack. It looked kind of like a lunch box sitting there on my tripod stand next to him. He looked down at my tiny amp and said "I'll try not to be too loud." I told him not to worry about it, we've got plenty of mikes, and channels on the PA for me to mike the amp if I needed to.

So we start playing, and as we play I keep noticing him looking at my amp with this bemused expression on his face. I've got it set as usual, the tube in the preamp is pushed to the point where I've got that nice touch responsive grit and growl, and leads are just slicing through the mix.

We stopped for a break and he asked me, "What is that little thing - some kind of custom Vox model? It's walking all over my Marshall." I just grinned, and said. "Nope, it's a Vox VR15, and if you want, you can ride over Guitar Center tomorrow and pick one up on sale for $99." The expression on his face when I told him that . . .

Priceless.
