When I get called upon to set in with a band that plays nothing but blues. I don't take my usual bar band set up. I generally take a Gibson Falcon 12 watt amp or two of them, altair attenuators, a 4 space rack case with a power conditioner, tube preamp, art 341 stereo equalizer, Roland delay. Pedals on the floor would include a Mxr equalizer, volume pedal, wah.

My signal chain would look like this if I was only using one amp

Guitar-> Mxr-> Tube preamp-> equalizer-> delay-> amp-> attenuator-> speaker. The volume and wah pedals would be in the effects loop of the preamp. If I even included them. More times than not I wouldn't use them.

If I was using two amps it would look like this.

Guitar-> Mxr-> Tube preamp-> one side of the equalizer-> First guitar amp-> attenuator-> Speaker. Being the tube preamp has numerous outs. I use the other side of the stereo outs into the other side of the equalizer-> delay-> guitar amp-> attenuator-> speaker. The volume and wah pedals would be in the effects loop of the preamp or I might include them in the chain to the second amp.

What it really comes down to is running the tube amp hard enough by clipping 4 to 8 db off them to get the speakers to break out. Its that overdriven tube amp tone which creates harmonics which give you a certain tone and feel to your playing style. The rest comes from within you.

Joe

This is because tubes sound their best when they are pushed, and the more the signal going through the tubes generally you get a better sound. I have never played a tubescreamer through a solid state setup. If you are looking for good sound out of solid state, I would recommend Tubed distortion pedals. Electro-Hamonics makes some of the best tubed distortion IMHO. I believe the English Muffin sells a lot.

A couple of questions...being a newbie to the world of pedals I always assumed that whenever a tubescreamer was mentioned it applied to use with a tube amp.Are you telling me that this pedal does justice to a digital amp? I also see that when looking on ebay etc there are several type from vintage to modded. When shopping for the pedal can you tell me which specs I should look for ie. what model #,are turbo's all good, and how much a used pedal would be approx. I see prices from $109 US to several hundred bucks. Maybe I'll take my stuff into a guitar shop and try a couple along with an equilizer pedal or two. At my playing level I am always reluctant to try to impress music store hangarounders.
Robbie

Robbie

Probaby the greatest weakness of the Zoom pedals is that you do not have a lot of control with the EQ. You can get close to a tone you like, but never quite "there" if you know what I mean.

I would invest in an inexpensive EQ pedal first like the Danelectro or even the new Behringer 7 band. It is getting good reviews and costs about $20. You really can't lose at that price.

Behringer EQ700

I found EQ settings on my Zoom pedal that were close to the tones I wanted. Then I use my EQ pedal to carefully fine tune the tone (I place it after the Zoom). An EQ pedal makes an amazing difference. For instance, I have found the slider at 100 Hz to be very important. Push it up and you have amazing bottom end, push it a little more and you have mud. So this allows you to get the most warmth and punch out of your tone without mushing out. And EQ pedals are super easy to use.

I have whined about this before but I purchased a Fender 900 deluxe amp about a year ago. I cannot seem to get the tone out of it that I want. It has a very sterile clean channel. I would like the clean channel with some Warmth? Whenever I try to dial in the tone I want on my Zoom 505 pedal it seems that the amp sounds very muddy. Does anyone have any suggestions as to dedicated pedals to use or should I go to what I perceive to be the answer ie. a tube amp such as a Fender HRD or ? As I have said before I bought this amp to save a few hundred $ and also get some effects in the bargain but: I don't use the effects and I have gone back to using my Peavey Blazer 158. Go figure! I might also mention that I like classic rock, pseudo blues like EC unplugged, country/folk. Wes I have tried a bazillion settings on the Zoom 505. Wes, Joe anyone? I would go to my local music store guy but he is the one that talked me into the digital amp in the first place.
Robbie
