I usually don't want that clouded up by fuzzy, buzzy speakers. That's punk rock stuff, IMO. Not much point in using tubes if the speakers are heavily distorting what comes out of them.

There are many "blues tones." If you want to hear really fuzzy, nasty distortion from cranking up a little cheap amp WFO, check out some of the modern Mississippi blues players on Fat Possum. That sound of just cranking everything to Patent Pending is great for jumpin' party music, and I like to do that with an amp like my Electar Tube 10 sometimes. Just turn every knob as high as it'll go and wail on it. But for more expressive playing I don't want everything maxed; you lose all dynamics when you do that.

I do look up certain musician's gear often just to see what they use.

Here is an interview with Neil Young about his gear. He carries lots of amps, but always uses an old Fender Deluxe ('59 I believe). When asked about how he gets his distortion he says he simply uses volume, no distortion or overdrive pedals at all. He does use a very few effects though. His famous "whizzer" is a device that automatically manually changes the settings on his amp to get favortie tones. But overall, he is simply just playing through an old tube amp maxed out. Here is the article. You can find lots by just typing Neil Young gear in Google or Yahoo. I do that for lots of players.

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/ptma/equip.htm

I want to hear what's coming out of the tubes, without heavy coloration by the speakers.

High wattage speakers usually have a higher sensitivity rating, measured in dB at 1 meter in front of the speaker baffle with a 1W signal driving it. So they're louder with a low power amp than a low power rated speaker, in general. Opposite of what people often think. Bigger magnets and voice coils make for higher sensitivity, generally.

A 4 X 12 rated at 280 watts handling power tells you that each individual speaker is rated 70 watts.

As Arjen said, there will be no problems whatsoever using this cab, but you will not get much speaker distortion which some players want. But it would be difficult to find a speaker that would break up easily with a 5 watt amp, most speakers are rated at least 25 watts handling power.

But some players will use speakers like a Celestion Greenback rated at 25 watts handling power with a 15, 30, 40, or even 50 watt amp to purposely overpower the speaker and drive it into distortion. This can be a great Blues or Rock overdrive type tone.

Passive speakers have no power of their own. The power rating simply tells you the wattage the speaker can safely handle without damage. Speakers that are rated higher are usually of higher grade construction and materials. But that doesn't mean they necessarily sound better.

I read an article where Zakk Wylde said he uses 4 EV speakers each rated at 200 watts handling power in his Marshall 4 X 12 cabs. So each cab is rated 800 watts total. But he does this so he can use massive distortion with huge bottom end and volume without the speakers breaking up or blowing. I believe he uses Marshall JCM800 amps rated 100 watts.

And you can use a speaker rated only 25 watts handling power with an amp rated 100 watts or even more provided you do not turn the amp up too loud and overpush the speaker. It will work fine without damaging the speaker or amp. But turn that amp up loud and the speaker will probably blow quick.

I know you didn't ask for all this, but speaker power handling ratings are a little confusing to some.
