Guitar speakers are meant to add some color your sound. It's the speaker's characteristics that can add a major difference in the amp's sound and feel. Speakers can be used to fine tune your amp and cabinets. It comes down to a personal choose. I use mainly Celestion G12m-70, I have amps and cabinets that have a wide variety of speakers in them. The different characteristics give rise to different box design and speaker combinations aimed at different musical styles.

If you go to Celestion on the left hand side you'll see a link called Tone Selector. It's designed for auditioning the wide-variety of Celestion guitar speakers, The Tone Selector lets you hear what a specific speaker will sound like in various cabinet configurations with different styles of music.

Celestion.com

Joe

When you're switching to the distortion channel, you're getting more "gain." That means the incoming signal is amplified more, both the musical signal you want and any extraneous noise. You're hearing hum from the power line frequency that's being amplified more on that channel. If you have a guitar with single coil pickups, get used to it, you're not going to get rid of it. (Turn the guitar volume off when you're not playing, bring it back up right before you start, and the hum's not noticeable while you're playing.) If you have humbuckers, check the grounding and shielding inside your guitar, the cable, and the amp may be picking up some of its own internal hum from the power transformer and tube heater circuit.

Most often, I think guitar gear choices are based on what people hear from their friends or read on the Net. It's unusual to be able to A-B different speakers with the same amp like you can in a car stereo store, for instance. Just a few real gearheads have the actual experience. Knowing how another kind of speaker sounds in somebody else's rig isn't the same, either.

I'm very happy with the Jensen MODs I've recently put in two of my combo amps, but I certainly didn't buy competing speakers to try in them, so I really can't say how Celestions would have sounded different in them. A big factor for me was that I could get the Jensens cheap!

As for the noise: What sort of noise?

I changed out the crummy stock speaker in one of my amps because it was getting scratchy after playing at high volume for a while.
