Here is a great site with lots of useful information about guitars, amps, and effects. Here is a page that gives a brief description of common effects. Hope this helps. These effects can apply to either electric or acoustic/electric guitars.

One of the problems is that its difficult to play and experiment at the same time. Is there a good lesson on here somewhere about the use of effects for acoustic guitarists/singers?
