I've got my Valve Junior at work with me, speaking of tossing it in the trunk. I sit here and play in between bouts of actually having to "work."

Here I'm playing it at low volume, so it's very clean. It hums a fair amount, but the hum comes in after the volume control and doesn't vary with the volume. It's mostly noticeable when it's sitting unplayed. The cause, IMO, is having the traces for the heater power supply very closely adjacent to the trace for the signal returning from the volume control to the grid of the second stage of the 12AX7.

It's hard to beat a basic tube amp, and this is as basic as it comes. It's a typical student amp of the '50s, just one built on a printed circuit board.

I think the Valve jr. is smoother and warmer at clean settings and crunchier at lower volumes and a bit more low fi, maybe. The Galaxie 10 is probably more different than the Blues jr. in sound quality, having more of a "british" sound, in that it's a bit honky, and is definately low fi. The Valve jr. is probably a more generally useful amp than the Galaxie, though, which I use mostly for a country blues sound.

I got some nice jazzy sounds and warm bluesy sounds and classic rock crunch from the Valve jr., all sounds you can get easily from a Blues jr, but at a lower volume than the Fender. If I was going to use the amp primarily for practice I would probably go with the Epi, especially if I wanted overdrive at bearable volumes and didn't need a lot of clean headroom. If I was going to play it out, especially with a band, I would probably choose the Blues jr. (if I was playing lead, I would probably get the Pro jr., actually).
There's enough overlap that I wouldn't get both amps.

If I wanted one good, small tube amp that does a lot, between the two I would probably go with the Blues jr. (actually I went with a Reverand Goblin, but that's somewhere between a Blues jr. and a Deluxe Reverb).
If I was planning on buying an upmarket amp down the road, like a Deluxe Reverb, then the Blues jr. seems a bit redundant and I would get the Epi as something I could play around home and toss in my trunk without worry (which is what I do with the Galaxie 10).

Hard to compare directly to the Blues Jr., but Ricochet was right in that this amp is somewhat comparable. A buddy has the Jr and one of the main differences is that the Special is a bit easier to get crunchy. On the downside, the Special has a fairly audible hum that I believe haunts the entire line. The Jr is much quieter. It's also much more expensive. :)

Bottom line - I'm enjoying the amp and for the price, I think it's unbeatable.

Steve
