I too would agree that you will get better tone from the Vox amp. 60 watts should be sufficient for you for some time to come. If you can afford the pedalboard that goes along with the Vox, get that too. With that combination will be able to get just about any sound and effect you'll every need.

And, Welcome to GuitarNoise.

Howdy, welcome as active member! 8)

First of all, just in case you didn't knew it already, make sure you visit Musik Produktiv in Ibbenbüren, they've got more amps then something that has loads of amps, and you can try them all. They are often darn cheap as well. Not exactly walking distance from Berlin, but well worth the trip.

Anyway, I wouldn't go with the Spider II 212. It's a nice amp, but for pretty much the same money you have a Vox AD60VT which sounds infinitely more natural. I suggest either going for the vox or save up and try a line6 Flextone III. Some like this line6 amp better, some prefer the Vox, a matter of preference. I'm not going into the whole tube vs solidstate discussion again, and I'm sure others would come in to recommend some proper tube amps in your budget as well. Just try them all and go with what you like best.

The Behringer MIDI pedal is very nice, and dirt cheap, but not all amps support MIDI. Both the Spider II series and the Vox AD series have, IIRC, there own non-MIDI floorboards (for much more money).

As for wattage: really depends on the amp itself and the speaker efficience. A 30W tube amp is MORE then loud enough to handle clubs, and a decent 50W solidstate should be able to keep up as well. Some people even use 15-30W solid-state amps without too much trouble in smaller places. If you plan to mic it the wattage really doesn't mean much.

Merry Christmas!

hi there,

i realise i'm (kinda) new here and i should read and search more before i post, but still, i have a feeling that NOBODY ELSE on this planet can possibly be as lost as I am (despite all the reading i've already done), so here i go:

Situation:
1. i never ever played through a tube amp in my life, or if i did, i didn't know i was, therefore i don't know what a tube amp feels like.
2. Santa brought me enough cash to afford (with a bit of stretching) the Spider II 212 from Line 6
3. i will start a band, and i will play in clubs in my (adoptive) town (Berlin, Germany - for the courious) so the amp i buy should handle everything from practicing with a drummer to performing a club gig, miked and through the PA or not.
4. since all i ever owned so far was a 15Watt practice amp, i will consider whatever i will decide to get to be my 'first serious amp'.
5. the 'tube vs transistors' dilema leaves me cold, since i don't have a clear ideea nor feeleing about any of them. eventually i tend to favour modern modelling technology because:
7. i'm pretty much into computers and home recording, the software demos from Native Instruments (Battery and Guitar Rig) amazed the hell out of me, and Ableton's Live which came with my soundcard amazed me even more, consequently i also need to get my hands on a guitarport from Line 6 real soon ! :-)
8. i also feel like buying :
- a midi foot controller from Behringer

i'll stop here.
i guess the bottomline questions would be :
1. what's the minimum of wattage i need for rehearsing with a drummer and handling a medium size club gig. (tube or not, which one and why?)
2. what's the best use of (ger)money you would make in my place? :-)
(see, you're free to blah blah blah) :-)

3. everybody got a nice present already ? hope so! peace!

Great Website, by the way, i'm reading it since years , really, (since 2001, i think) i actually grew with it (as a guitarist) but i just decided to post something in Forums now). Congratulations !

Merry Christmas Everyone ! What's my first amp gonna be ?
