I've had amazing succes with using a cheap V-amp with an equally cheap EVJ. The only problem is minimizing the pre-amp of the EVJ. So personally I'm glad the pre-amp is transistor, doesn't make any sense to me to use modeling between a tube pre-amp and post-amp: the pre-amp would probably color it way too much to get the models to be consistent.

BTW, Line6 and Bogner are working together on the Spider Valve series, running around $650 for the cheapest one. So far I'm not too hyped by that one, the clips sound pretty lame to me. Then again I always despised the Spider modeling so maybe I'm biased.

As for the Valvetronix circuitry it's quite different from both the Marshall AVT line (pre-amp tube) and this fender I guess. The pre-amp tube in the vox serves as a miniature poweramp (in some ways not too unlike their cooltron pedal line) which then goes into the transistor poweramp. this circuity is after the digital modeling and before the poweramp. The fender poweramp tubes will replace both the pre-amp tube and the transistor poweramp of the Vox. Ofcourse the interesting part is how the fixed tube poweramp will mix with the variable digital modeling, and whether or not an internal loadbox (Koch studiotone, for example) will be missed or not.

I got that from someone quoting a guy from Fender who posted on the FDP. But he also said "6V6 tube power amps driven by a 12AX7" and I don't know what that means.

Others are comparing this design to the old and highly regarded Music Man hybrid amps, in which the 12AX7 was used solely as a phase inverter.

Too bad there's only an unbalanced line out and not an XLR-type of direct out. Probably there's not much build cost difference. The push-pull Class AB1 15W has one more tube and socket. For a given power rating, the single-ended output transformer will be larger and more expensive than the push-pull one.

The audible volume difference between 5W and 15W is pretty subtle.

A single ended Class A and a push-pull Class AB output stage distort differently when overdriven, each having their own characteristic sounds that some prefer.

The basic instinct to "get more for your money" is how most of us have gotten amps bigger than we need, and also bigger waistlines from supersized meals, gas guzzling cars, etc. There are usually economies of production that make a bigger, more powerful model not that much more expensive than a smaller one, and it's easy to sell "more power!"
