A snarling, tiger growl. Comes from blocking distortion with a short time constant in the interstage coupling between the two 12AX7 stages, I think. Wouldn't get that if they hadn't balanced the stages for way excessive drive with the volume cranked, and they got the time constant of the coupling capacitor and grid load resistor just right.

Yeah. "Ric" took the words right outta my mouth.

Congrats on your new toy!!!! I've never actually heard an Epi Valve Jr. (oh oh...), but it sounds like a cool amp.

With Christmas just around the corner (and me completely 'round the bend  ), I'm hoping to get either an amp, a guitar, or both (if remotely feasible). I'll be asking advice (and trying to understand stuff such as Ricochet's above quote :?) soon enough. You've been warned.

Anyway, have fun with your new baby, and I'll be listening for some sound clips! :D

Thanks!

The EVJ is a great amp, plenty of grunt and TONS of tone. Very vintage sound. I had never heard one either, until I got mine home, but it goes very well with my EMG-equipped SG. Have a look at one!
