Too much really cuts the sustain.<br>Cool; thanks.  I played with the noise gate last night, and ended up just leaving it at the defaults.  Like you said, I might turn it down or off for the clean channels, but for now its fine for my purposes.  <br><br>I like the built-in compressor for adding sustain, though it's disappointing that you can't tweak the "attack" setting when the compressor is used in combination with another effect.  But by itself it seems to do a nice job.]]></content:encoded>

( <a href="http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?t=12409&amp;highlight=">http://forums.guitarnoise.com/viewtopic.php?t=12409&amp;highlight=</a> )<br><br>Well it turns out it was a problem with the amp (Line 6 Spider II 30W), not the cable.  I narrowed it down to having something to do with the amp's gain boost feature.  I know that increasing gain can amplify noise in the line, but this was really unbearable and getting worse over time.  Sorry I'm not an electrician so can't give a more informative reason.<br><br>The good folks at Guitar Center gave me full credit for the amp even though I was past the 30-day return window, so I upgraded to the increasingly popular Vox Valvetronix AD30VT and am very pleased with it.   What a difference an amp makes!  Sounds really great with my Ibanez Artcore, and best of all it's quiet when it's supposed to be!<br><br>Cheers,]]></content:encoded>
