I just got finished answering a very similar question. :D

You really need to understand a PA before you spend any money. I highly recommend going to Scott's PA Tutorial and reading. It will take you step by step from the very simplest PA to a very complex (and expensive) system.

Take a little time and read the tutorial, it is short and to the point, very well written. Get familiar with the terms too. If you have any questions, come back and ask and there are quite a few of us here who own PAs and can answer your questions. If you are looking at particular gear, let us know, we are familiar with many of the items.
