I've made that same mention in a few posts here but I guess you can't get the stack out of the "Rock Star"

Someone mentioned 10 x the power for double the volume. I think that only works in Decibels. that is that every ten bels or decibel is a doubling of volume. I'm not sure that wattage actually works this way as well. Doubling the number of speakers may not necessarily double the volume either as this is effected by resistance and speaker performance. Anyway I think the point is well made that power rating does not necessarily equal volume. I know some computer stores that advertise 400watt output from a 2.1 speaker system with 4"drivers. Umm....sketchy?

My brother spent about $6,000 (Australian Dollars) on a Marshall stack. The thing is damn loud and big and heavy. The problem is, the sound it produces gets better as the volume goes up, so he always ends up turning it up as loud as people can bear. The sound guy loses control of the guitar level, so the whole mix is ruined, and the guitar sound is travelling in one direction. If you stand in line with his stack, it sounds good. If you stand anywhere else, the sound is muddy and you can't make out what he's playing.

I think he made a stupid decision. Stacks are fine for rock bands playing in front of 10,000 people, but the wrong choice of amp for a small to medium sized venue playing in front of a few hundred people if you're lucky.

Have a good think about where you're planning on playing. Buy an amp that sounds good at lower volumes and give control of the levels to the sound guy. That way more of the audience gets to hear what you're playing.

It works kinda like this...

Start with an amp pushing 100 watts into 2 12" speakers. To double the volume using power alone, you need to push 1000 watts through the same speakers. Twice the volume (moving twice as much air) takes 10 times the power.

Now replace the 2 x 12 cab with a 4 x 12 cab. The volume will be twice as loud, because you're moving twice as much air.

Depending on what type of use your amp will see, and the sound you want, you might well be better off getting a lower powered amp, and a bigger cab

The only amps I know of that even approach 400 watts are bass amps and that's because it just takes so much more power to reproduce low frequencies. Check your specs again.
Yes , I did.

Thats not the way it works. Just buy one head for the two 4x12 cabinets, this is a full stack. If you buy two heads and two 4x12 cabinets this called two half stacks.

The power your thinking about is Peak RMS which is if your running the head at or near full volume the power from the head and speakers will peak power from the dynamics of your playing.

If the cabinets are Marshall they more than likely have celestions in them, each speaker is only rated 30 watts at 16 Ohms for each speaker. (depending on what speakers are in it). In this scenario of the speakers I mentioned, the way the cabinet is wired is how the speakers add up to what amount of power you need to push it with and at what Ohms.

My advice would be to forget about the 800 watts. The 100 or 200 watt head will push the one cabinet or two cabinets just fine. Even at half volume you will be pushing enough air and wattage to stop charging animals at 200 paces.

Lets recap..Buy one 100 watt head and two 4x12 cabinets. Plug the cabinets in as directed by the manual for the amp, plug the amp in to the electric, plug your guitar in, turn the volume controls down, turn amp on, making sure the its on standby to allow the tubes to warm up first (its a tube amp). Then flip the standby switch to on and turn the volume up where you like.

Joe
