I am no amp expert, but I agree with Moonrider, most amp Line Outs are just your preamp section only. A Line Out is a weak signal that has to be amplified, the power section puts out a strong amplified signal.

Can't use the HRDs preamp out for headphones. My DSL401 has a Line Out, can't use that for headphones either. The Line Out on my Marshall is the preamp section only, it has "cab simulation" to give the effect of playing through a cab/speaker.

I believe some of the Webers offer a jack for headphones, but this is not a Line Out. They have Line Outs in addition to the Headphone Out.

Don't have to do any surgery to hook up an attenuator to an HRD. Under the head is two Speaker Outs. You simply unplug the 1/4" jack from the speaker going to the 1st Speaker Out. Now you run a speaker cable (male/male) from this Speaker Out to the input on the attenuator. Then you need a male/female speaker cable. The male goes into the output on the attenuator, then you plug the HRDs speaker into the female jack. Takes one minute tops to hook it all up. :D

You can get the speaker cables (not instrument) on Weber's site for about $7 each.

The Preamp Out/Power Amp In on the HRD is your effect's loop. You go out of the Preamp Out into a pedal or multi-efx, then come out of the pedal or multi-efx back into the Power Amp In on the amp.

You can bypass the preamp section on the HRD by going straight into the Power Amp In on the HRD with a multi-efx. You will lose all tone and volume controls, you would control these completely with your guitar and pedal/multi-efx.

The amps still have preamp out, but doesn't that negate the benefit of the all-tube power section? I know it's a line level signal, but the only sound you are getting is the preamp, without any sort of power tube distortion.

Almost every line out I've seen built in to an amp pulls from the pre-amp section. They'd have to build an attenuator in to the amp to pull from after the power stage,

Thanks for your suggestion, Dwayne. What kind of benefits does the mixer get you? I'm probably mostly looking just to listen through headphones, not so much to record, so wouldn't the line out signal on the mini mass be sufficient? Also, it seems to be telling me that the 40W HRD would need an attenuator rated at 100W, to the tune of at least $160. Woof. What kind of surgery is necessary to use this attenuator?

You can't use the line out from the Mass Lite as a headphone jack. Ted Weber can provide you with the technical reasons but I think the reason is the line level signal is too strong. You'll need the mixer to provide a mechanism for the headphones. Since you don't plan on recording I see the two benefits from the mixer are to provide a headphone jack and a line in for "silently" playing along with backing tracks or other CDs.

Your original post mentioned a dorm. Utilizing the the attenuator and mixer combination, you can set the Mass Lite to maximum attenuation (zero external volume), plug in your favorite backing track on your iPod at max volume, put on a set of headphones, and jam away for hours while your roommate studies for his Anatomy & Physiology exam the next morning. Of course he'll get into Med School but you'll have all the groupies  Everybody wins!

However, the only time I have to practice is between 5:30 and 7:00 a.m. when the wife and kids are still asleep. I use a Weber Mini Mass coupled with a Behringer UB802 mixer to achieve the same result. I get the added benefit of running lines into the mix for playing along to CDs as well as the ability to run the mix to a computer for recording should my abilites improve to that level. The combined cost of the added components will push the cost fender amp at or slightly above the cost of the new B52 but you get a lot more features and you get that Fender mojo.

http://www.tedweber.com/atten.htm
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-Xenyx-802?sku=631263

One other thing I forgot to mention, and there are threads on the forum about attenuators, is the beauty of pushing the tubes while maintaining lower volume levels is something you have to experience to believe.

/Dwayne
