Did you guys get everything sorted out? Come up with a plan just in case it happens again?

The piano player and I talked about it and came up with some ideas. We'll present them to the group at tomorrow night's practice. We will probably have to change the way we do that particular song, but I think more important is to have a contingency for when one of the key players can't be there for whatever reason.

Thanks guys!

Drummers.

:sigh:

In our contemporary church services, we typically do 4 or 5 songs during the first part of the service, then there's a break for communion, and we come back to do a closing song - usually an uptempo rocker.

Somewhere between the start of communion and our closing song, the drummer went AWOL. I'm laughing to myself about the possibility that he spontaneously combusted (a la Spinal Tap), and I turned to the guitarist to make a joke about it. I figured the band leader would buy us some time by talking to the congregation for a minute or two, and hopefully the drummer would show up.

Instead, she (band leader) turns to me and says "start playing." I say, "aren't you going to introduce the song?" She's turning red and is obviously mad, and she gnashes her teeth at me and says "just start!"

Okay, well this is the song that I do the palm-muted intro for, so I start thumping away on my bass. I figure I'll just keep things muted and more percussive to make up for the missing drums. Guitar and piano started up after four bars, and we were off ...

Now, we keep my bass out of the small stage monitors because it gets a little muddy. So I can hear the singers, but they're not really in time with us. I slowed down to get to their pace, but the guitarist and piano kept going as before. The singers could have at least had the courtesy to clap their hands if they wanted to set their own beat!!!

We finally started to gel toward the end of the first chorus, and things improved after that. But my wife came up afterwards and said, "your bass sounded off." :x Everyone's a critic.

Oh, we found the drummer, still alive. Until the worship leader got to him ...
