Hello to all!

Sunday, November 1, is the final show of FODfest 2009! It's been a wonderful, crazy tour, with forty shows since October 1.

The last show will be at Infinity Hall and Bistro, a beautiful theater from the 1800's (Mark Twain spoke there) in Norfolk, Connecticut. It starts at 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time and will also be shown through a live feed at the FODfest blog:

http://fodfest.org/fodblog.html

Those of you who can come, please do! Those that can't but want to listen, please do!

You might also be interested in some photos from this year's shows:

And in case you're new to FODfest and have not read about it before, let me give you the lowdown from the FODfest website itself:
In 2002, the world came to know Daniel Pearl as the Wall St. Journal reporter who was abducted and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan. What happened to him was unconscionable. To film his murder and use the video as a means to propagate the hatred that motivated it...there is no word for that. In response to this heinous act, Todd Mack, a close friend of Pearl's, started FODfest (Friends of Danny festival) as a way to honor his friend with a legacy that reflects the ideals by which he lived rather than the tragic way in which he died.

In addition to being a journalist, Daniel Pearl was a talented musician who believed in the power of music to bring people together regardless of the differences between them. A classically trained violinist and avid fiddler & mandolin player, music was Danny's way of connecting with people and learning about the local culture as he traveled the world. In a unique performance experience that is part jam session, part song swap, part concert, FODfest is a living celebration of this ideal. Some of the musicians performing were friends of Danny's, while others didn't know him at all. Most are meeting for the first time on stage. They all share Danny's belief in music as a universal language.

MISSION
FODfest, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote and strengthen community through the universal language of music by producing publicly accessible live music events and multi-media projects.

HISTORY
In just five years, FODfest has grown considerably from its humble beginnings as an informal backyard jam to a full-fledged national tour. To date, FODfest has toured to 20 cities with more than 350 musicians from across the country and across the globe participating. FODfest '09 will include a 31 day national tour this October as a featured event of Daniel Pearl World Music Days, which is organized by the Daniel Pearl Foundation. All of the concerts are free and open to the public, with the exception of the two shows at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival (October 8 and 9 in Pittsboro, NC).

Having played in FODfest the last three years, I can attest to what a magical time it is. This year the shows have been around the country and also spent time in Taiwan:

I caught a brief glimpse of this (My Birthday song) - it looked like a lot of fun, though I'll never complain about a crowded stage again!

I think I saw a left-handed banjo(?) neck sticking up from behind 2 people at the left side (as we faced it) of the stage.

Probably the ukulele. That's where I would have been - almost totally behind Karen. It was certainly crowded up there!

Thanks to everyone who watched, not to mention to all who came to listen. And not to mention everyone who played at any point during the tour. Todd said that over three hundred musicians participated over the course of the tour.

Peace

David,

I watched you on the live feed... you did treffic job in that opening jam number right at the beginning of the show. What was the actual name of that song again?

Thanks! That's Man in Black Blues, a song that came out of the Sunday Songwriters Group a number of years back when Bob was running it (and thanks, Bob, for that one!). When Todd announced the order of the lineup (less than ten minutes before we all went onstage) and I found out I was going to be third, I'd originally planned to do Saturn's Moons, which is a little more jazzy and laid back. But the first two songs of the show were also more of a laid back feel (although definitely not jazzy), so I made the decision to change my song almost while getting to the front of the stage. You can hear live versions of both these songs on my Soundclick page, by the way.

Part of me didn't want to, especially as I had done this song in Oak Park earlier in the week (with Corky Siegel taking all the leads on harmonica - wow!!) But thankfully, it worked for the better and also got the group into a good jamming frame of mind. Thanks to all the soloists (especially Karen and Greg who both had prepared for me doing Saturn's Moons) and you really haven't lived 'til you had someone play a musical saw solo on a song you've written!

Thanks a lot for watching! It means a lot to me, as well as to all the people involved with FODfest. And, by the bye, if you want to see photos, you can go here:

The first ten pages are from the Infinity Hall show and there are also photos from the Village Players Performing Arts Center in Oak Park, Illinois (with some great shots of Kathy Reichert) starting around page 11.

Peace

David,

Thanks for the extra info. Yes, it was great to watch.

Those in the live feed were able to chat with each other, and wanted to know who I knew on stage. I told them my buddy David Hodge was there - and although I had not yet met him in person, I had spent months with him on guitar lessons over the last few years. My wife got a chuckle out of that as she know its true.

Keep up the good work..... by the way... I had no idea that kind of work came out of that song writers get-to-gether.

It's amazing how many songs that I currently play came out of the SSG. Both Kathy Reichert and I got to do two songs apiece at the Oak Park show and all four (Father McKenzie and No Reflection on You from Kathy, Man in Black Blues and Julia and John for me)had their humble start from the SSG. That's too cool!

You wouldn't have seen him in the camera but Greg Nease ("gnease" here on the Guitar Noise Forums) provided some very tasty and tasteful guitar parts, including the solo right after the saxophone on Man in Black Blues. Also too cool.

Thanks again for watching, and thanks as well for the on-air commentary! I'm still more than a bit amazed by all the possibilities of this new age.

Peace

There is. It's a little (more than a little) involved, but...

1) Go to the FODblog page ( http://fodfest.org/fodblog.html )

2) Clicking on the embedded video there will take you to here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2473563

3) Down on the lower right hand side will be an area labeled "more from limerockcodger" with short snippets of the live video feed from FODfest. They are in reverse chronological order. The first one, "DMLWeb live cam 11/01/09 01:13PM" is on page 18. As of now, that is.

The cutting of the show is problematic. You'll be in the middle of a song and the vid will end and the next one start up not quite on time. Kind of like a video version of the old eight track players  But it will give you a pretty good idea of what it was like.

And there'll will definitely be more. Maybe Todd will get over to England next year and we'll be watching you up there!

Peace
