Do you think maybe he was playing it backwards?

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Always glad to share an experience that might help out someone else.

PS. I did get that guys name if anyone is experiencing a drought.

We played for the summer festival at the end of July during that seriously dry-hot spell, as some may remember. Of that gig we got another booking for a local bar in Muscatine and that was scheduled for last Saturday 9/9.

As I was driving there, 45 minute drive, I had a strange feeling we were going to get rained on at some point in the night. It had been threatening rain all day but hadn't yet. The bar owner insisted we come anyway as the bassist who booked the band had been in phone conversations with the owner all day long. So it was decided we were going. Now the reason for this dilemma is that we setup and play on the back patio area of the bar. There is no room inside for a band. It isn't even covered but it is cement. (my guess is there aren't too many bands playing there in the winter.) Just a hunch.

So I show up about 8 PM, and the rest of the band is already there and setup. We don't go on til 9:30 so I don't know what the big deal was to get there so early. So I proceed to bring my drums in and set them up. It takes me about 15-20 minutes to set my stuff up and wait for the sound check. I no sooner set the last cymbal on the stand and tighten the wing nut and here comes the sprinkles. It continues to sprinkle so I decided to remove the cymbals and pack them back up. I few minutes later I get a handful of white garbage bags to cover the drums.

Nice. Now everything is getting wet. We go sit in the back of the band truck trying to figure out our next move. We decide that we will sit this one out and hope the rain stops. We still have an hour before we go on. The sprinkling continues but is getting a little heavier. Still nothing too bad as it's not getting the ground wet yet. We had some short guy with a touch of downs syndrome who pretty much adopted the band the minute we pulled up. He was only about 4 foot tall but quite the outgoing individual. He was getting hammered, too.

So after we decide that we are going to wait out the rain or make the bar owner shut us down we were just sitting in the truck talking about the songs for tonight and the singer and I were going over some lyrics and harmonies. All of a sudden this little downs guy starts walking around the back parking lot (where the truck was parked) and starts chanting for the rain to stop. He carries on for about 15 minutes up and back up and back and he keeps getting louder and more deliberate. Finally, it starts raining hard enough so that the ground is getting wet and he's getting soaked. It's now about 9:30 and still no let up in site and we are supposed to go on now. The bassist is in the bar looking at the local weather for the radar to determine what to do next.

So along about 10:15 the bar owner calls and says that we might as well pack up and go home. Now to the point of this entire deal.

He actually paid us the full amount of the contract since we stayed and were ready to go should the weather let up.

Funny thing....I usually indicate that I play for free and get paid to move the gear. This time that really happened.

So to all you band mates. If you run into a situation where you can back out or bar owner can...let them. If they are upstanding, they will be fair in compensation. I never would have thought it to happen but there are good employers out there after all. I also think the fact the we handled our end in a professional manner didn't hurt one bit.

I have to play again this coming weekend for a Harley's and Hotrod's outdoor event. I hope we have better luck this weekend.
