Yep, I'd suggest just going up to one of the musicians after church and just start a conversation. Maybe the guitarist - ask about the guitar they play, how long you been playing? sort of thing. Ask them how they got started in the worship band, and let them know you are a musician too, and would love to volunteer your talents. Maybe see if you can get together informally to learn some of the worship songs, and just jam a little, either at someone's house, or see if you could join them at a practice. Sounds like your church doesn't really have a huge band with alot of people wanting to join, so my guess would be that they would be open to having another good musician on board.

Dan

If you can continue to breath while standing and then do that in front of people you can play at our church. How else do you think I got the gig? :D

We also have acoustic and electric/lead guitar. They both compliment each other so there is no toe stepping involved.

Open conversations with those involved would be your best bet. Since the pastor of our church makes those decisions and leads our praise team, he's the one we have as our go to guy.

Good luck with getting 'inside.'

From what I've read in a few forums, it seems that praise bands run the gamut from very casual, "everyone is welcome" types, to very rigid, "only professional musicians need apply" types. It sounds like you've already decided that yours is approachable, so that's a good thing.

I'd ask the guitarist if it would be alright to sit in with the group and play rhythm during one of their practice sessions. If your primary goal is to play guitar, you don't want to step on the current guitarist's toes, or make him feel threatened.

Then ask the guitarist who the praise band's leader is, and run it by that person (if it's not the guitarist.) If there's a member who introduces the songs, or leads the congregation during the service, chances are good that's the leader. In my last church it was the bass player; in my current church (and band) it's one of the singers. Best to ask.

And drop the hint that you can sing, too. That can only help!

I know several of you are on the praise and worship teams at your church and I have been in angst over how to approach doing this. The church has an email address and I considered emailing and letting them know that if a position comes open, then I would like to be a part of it. But you never know if an email is going to the right person or if it is even being read.

The problem is that I really dont know who to approach. They have a guitarist, drummer, and piano player. Sometimes a guy plays bass but not often. I dont want to replace the dude playing guitar but I sure would like to play with him, or even sing. I just dont know who to talk to.

It would be one of my more lofty goals completed if I could become a regular some time.

Any thoughts?

Jim
