Does it have to be a thicker string? I was wondering about the Low G tuning myself. I like the high G and believe that it's a big part of the Uke sound. Just how big? I dunno.

if the uke is a concert or tenor, string sets are available both ways. a tenor is usually low-G (G). the high-G (g) makes most uke chords close-spaced or doubles notes, which def is part of the soprano sound. nevertheless, seem many players end up liking low-G tuning for concert and larger ukes. mine (tenor, not concert as originally told by sales person) came high-G, but got them to throw in a low-G set to try later.

I'm also finding that I can play an E with the concert better than the soprano.

I can mash my 3 fingers in the 4th fret on the G,C,E strings and barre the 2nd fret to get that A string in. I can't barre with my ring finger due to it being broken when I was playing tennis many years ago. It doesn't bed at the knuckle like it should.

I am interested in trying a Low G on the concert at some point though.
