I have to laugh at the power cord that goe to the wall socket. It's 10' and is some ridiculously heavy gauge wire. The wire weighs a ton.

Another thing that bothered me about the last gig (and the two before) is the bathroom. At the first gig the door was pretty much open most of the time and it was a mess. The second gig had large bathrooms but pretty dirty. This last gig was a pretty big place and had a large bathroom but it was a wreck. Heck, the toilet seat was not even affixed to the toilet!

Granted, lots of people were there for shows early in the day and night so I can assume those who use the facilities mess it up. But it's obvious that bar owners apparently don't put any money into their bathrooms. So, I'm a guy and disgusted with this. I couldn't even imagine what girls would think of it. Sorry, just had to vent.

Oh what an interesting gig we had this past Friday night at Stage 83 down in Lemont, IL. Three bands were going to play: us opening, another band next then the headline band. We were to go on at 9pm and play until about 10pm. So I left work early and got down there at 7:15. As I roll into the parking lot I see a few trailers and a couple of RV's with band gear. People were walking in and out of the bar with gear and they all were late teens or early 20's at best and dressed in all black like punk rockers.

So I'm thinking “The sign does says Studio 83. It IS Friday night. Why are these other bands here?” Anyway, I go in the bar and look around for anyone from the band and I hear a band putting out some loud punk music. Nobody from our band. Now I'm really worried. Luckily the drummer & bass player showed up 5 minutes later. We talked and were trying to figure out how we're gonna play while this other punk band was setting up on our stage?

I go to the bartender and asked what's up and he said, “You're playing in the other room.” I didn't even notice but the had another 2/3 of the building for a much larger stage/audience area. He said he could not let us set up until 8pm when the second bartender got there. Not one to wait around, I hopped into my car and started driving around. Lo and behold I got lost and 28 miles later didn't get back to the club until 8:20pm!

Our drummer was mostly set up, the bass player was, the other guitar play was set up and tuning when one of the guys from the headline band asked if they could go on second and the other band wanted to go on first. With a little hesitation our front man said ok so we tore our stuff down and set it beside the stage.

So it's like 8:45pm and we're figuring we'd go on around midnight. At least that's what we were told. I hate waiting around and thought about driving around some more but decided not to. All of us grabbed some beers and hung out in the outdoor seating area and talked away. At times we popped in to see the punk bands in room 1 and other times walk in to the room where we'd eventually be playing.

Well by 10pm I had a few  and we were figuring we should mellow out until we actually play. I ate at 3pm figuring I'd have a few beers with the gang after the show and the catch some dinner. As it turned out all of us just kept drinking, talking and waiting.

The opening band was technically very skilled but not my type of music. The band that was supposed to headlining was not as flashy but more soulful and better for the audience. The punk bands in the other room were jumping all over the place and excited the crowd of young people.

Anyway, it got to be midnight and the singer said she didn't care if we played at all that night. Nevertheless, I'm still outside talking with other friends and it didn't dawn on me that the music had stopped so that meant I could go set up. I ended my conversation quickly and found that everyone was say half set up. I hurried to setup all my junk including my new wireless and power conditioner. Those made the setup a little different than normal.

So Alex asks if I'm ready and I told him to just start without me. I missed the first song and 1/3 of the next because I was still plugging in some wires and had to tune. They had a PA guy there who worked for the bar and was running sound for each band in room 2 all night. Being that late and figuring we'd only play an hour I just played my amp straight (not through the PA). I actually set up this time on the opposite side of the stage from the other guitar player so my amp wouldn't drown him out like the last two shows.

Halftime: go refresh your trusty beverage

I told everyone before the show that, if I'm too loud, tell me to shut up. On the third song I walked out into the dance floor to listen to the balance of my amp to the PA. Decent. Somewhere in the next two songs the sound guy gets up on stage and puts a mic up against my amp and ran me through the PA.

Well I wasn't happy about that but I wasn't going to kick the mic over. During that song or the next I asked the bass player (who was near me) if I was too loud and she smiled and nodded. I walked out into the audience and yep. So I turned down and when I got back on stage I could not hear my amp very well. I was going to move the mic so I would not go through the PA but didn't. So the whole volume thing happened on some of the songs.

On Learn to Fly (Foo Fighters) I didn't mess up this time. At some point in the past two gigs I spaced but nailed it this time. We played the fast ‘n “angry” version of Bad Moon Risin'. At the last practice we did it at a faster tempo and with overdrive. I really wanted to do it that way and persuaded the other guitar player we have to try it live.

It went over good. I walked out onto the dance floor to hear if I was too loud and I was fine. My sound blended in with the mix so well I purposely hit an off string to see if I could hear it (I did) and quickly switched back. I've never done that before on purpose, lol. Fortunately we were following the set list in order. I printed out 3 sheets with the songs in 40 point and put them on the floor in front of the 3 monitors so we could stay on course.

Unfortunately we got to 12th song and Alex said it was our last because a D.J. was going on at 1:30pm. The 12th songs was Black Betty and one I've only learned a couple of parts since it's a pretty hard song. I added what I could and it went well. We were told the place was open until 4am so we figured we could play as long as we wanted. Not. What's worse is more people started coming into the club while we're all tearing down and packing our gear. To see a D.J. :?:

So I packed all of my stuff and brought everything out to my car except two items. Since I drive a little Honda Civic I have very little room for my new rack or much of anything else. A friend of the band comes to all our shows. Scotty brought out my last two gig items and we tailgated for about an hour. More and more cars were pulling in and I thought that was so weird. These people were planning on a late night.

Got home about 3:30am and left everything in my car except my guitar. I messed around with some old songs I hadn't done in awhile for another hour or so and it was off to bed.
All in all, it was a fun gig albeit short. If I were to it over again I would have rather been the opening band. Waiting around for over 5 hours from the time I got there to the time we played was crazy. On the positive side, we all got to hang around at tables and talk a lot on a fairly cool July night. Our next show should be in another month. More time to tweak some things.

Between this band and the other, I'll be playing 4 Saturday night gigs in a row starting August 19th. If I make it through that anything's possible. I was glad the power conditioner seemed to help in that I didn't have any sound/hiss/ground issues. Now that may be attributed to the fact that this was a pretty big club with a decent size stage. Who knows? And I'm glad the wireless worked and didn't seem to add any extra noise. It was still weird having the transmitter hooked onto my strap.

So it's a wrap. That was my Friday night into Saturday morning. :)
