Twisted-

That was a great story.

Hey Joe, just saw your post tonight. Man, I wouldn't want you going on before me, I've heard your sound clips.

Gig stories are fun. Here's one.

About 3 years ago the band I was in played a gig in a small club. The area where the band played was sandwiched in between a kitchen in the back and the ladies restroom. It was crowded. If you stood on the left, you had to move to let the ladies get in to powder their nose.

We were playing our set when some sort of catastrophe happened in the girl's room. Water was coming out from under the door. The owner was running in and out. The water wasn't near our gear, so we just kept on.

About 20 minutes later a plumber comes in through the back dragging this large coil of 6 inch diameter tubing. He just walks right through us while we're playing, laying that nasty tubing over our cables. We are surprised and quit playing, but the owner told us to keep going so we start again.

The plumber comes out, walks through us again back out to the kitchen and turns on this very LOUD pump. Then he walks back through us again into the ladies room. Horrible noises are coming out of there. The sound of the pump was drowning us out. You could also see this nasty stuff traveling through the tubing laying on our gear. Augh!

We stopped again, but the owner insisted we keep playing, so we start again. This went on for about 20 minutes. Finally the plumber comes out and turns the pump off, then starts rewinding the tubing.

That's it really. But when I look back on it now I laugh.

But, doing it because I want to. THe free education I'm getting on how to run a live show, deal with problems etc, is worth more than money anyway. Plus a lot of the time I get cut rate or free drinks because I'm "with the band" so it all evens out. :)

It would be great if you would write them up properly and send them in so we can post them on the Home Page. There are a lot of GN readers who come here for the lessons. I realize that many of you might think that reading the lessons would be like reading the articles in Playboy - the Forum is where the action is! But not everyone visits every forum.

Anyway, we are making an effort to convert those posts that are really mini-lessons or articles. The main reason is so everyone can see them. Plus, you get links to related stories and lessons, an a quick sanity check from one of our editors. And you get a picture and a mini-bio!

And it's cool to say that you write for a website! And when you wear your GN T-shirt, you can say that you are a "contributor".

Questions? PM David or me.

-Laz

I can't figure out if ol' Murphy was a really smart cookie or if he was a just a sarcastic jerk. Either way he was right. What can go wrong… will. Here's how it goes.

For those of you that don't know:

Since about the middle of March I've been doing “roadie” work for a local band. They do hard rock/nu-metal covers and have an eye towards doing their own stuff. All the guys except the drummer are 35+. Experienced, and talented. They generally put on a good show.

This particular night we were playing a notorious biker bar, in a small town to the north. I say notorious because it's been shut down more than once for selling stuff other than beer. Including the week prior to the gig. None of us like the place, but when bars that hire live bands are few and far between you take what you can get.

(If anyone here is thinking of getting an amp head with a 4x12 cab, I'm telling you right now, you will start hating life by the second gig. The cab alone is a heavy pain in the backside. I know. I get to lug one around about every weekend. Get a good combo amp. Your back and muscles will thank you later.)

The show starts at 9pm, which means we start load in and set up about 6:30. No stage. So we have to set up on the floor by the front window/door. At least we can park close. A little after 7pm we have all the gear inside and the real fun starts.

Get the PA tops and bottoms in place, wired, light cans up on the trees, guitar, bass amps set, drums up. Nothing weird happens until I start running the snake to the soundboard.

Get just past the left side PA speakers and I look down to see a wall socket glowing blue. Look at the pretty lights. Cute! Not! I manage to jerk the extension cord out without getting electrocuted. The end of the cord is a melted mass of goo. YIPES! Even better, is the grounding plug for that cord is now a permanent fixture in the socket.

Finish running the snake and we get it all connected. Time to start getting initial sound checks. Turn everything on and all you can hear through the PA and monitors is HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Not good. The bass player, soundman, and I trace down what we think is the problem and replace that cord. Hum leaves the monitors and right PA speakers. Now it's in the left PA speakers, and the guitar/bass amps. Sigh.

So we do it all again and replace another chord. YAY! Hum is gone. No wait it's back in the monitors now. OMG! We eat up 30-45 minutes playing find the Hum Gremlin only to have it show up somewhere else. Finally manage to get rid of it. ALRIGHT! Time to check out the lights and do a vocals check. Lights first.

I switch on the lights. KERPOP! FLASH! DARKNESS! Cool, so this is what a bar looks like after it closes for the night. Anyone have a flashlight handy? I don't know which one of you just patted my backside but when them lights come on you better be female. :) Bar lights come back up, and the stage lights don't. YAY! By the way, since the PA and the monitors don't know all the words they have decided to HUM along once again. At this point we are seriously considering sending out for a Catholic priest to come do an exorcism.

We have an hour left to start time and the stress level is getting higher. Get the lights working. Set up and fill the fog machine, hit the button to test it and the lights go out again. But we have a really nice fog cloud. :) Where is MacGyver when you really need him? Okay, lights working, fog machine operating, vocals checked, PA/monitors humming. I think we're ready guys. Guys?

Stay Tuned for part two.
