Ah, yes, the end days of the LA punk scene. Instead of songs, these were my favorite albums:
X - "Wild Gift"
Black Flag - "Damaged"
And, in a fit of conformity:
Rush - "Moving Pictures" (which probably means my favorite song of that year was "Red Barchetta.")
"Everybody got to elevate from the norm."
My freshman year I was singing in an acapella band, so my favorites then were from an earlier era: Blue Moon (the Marcels version), Chantilly Lace (the Big Bopper) and Runaway (Del Shanon)
But I was also listening to Cream, Zep, and some of the brand new bands like Foghat and Styx... and saw Styx often back then, as they played at a lot of local school dances :)

Man, I listened to so much music then I can't even think of one song.
I'm sure it would have been Ozzy, Van Halen, Dio, Iron Maiden, Dokken, Ratt or one of many others. :) Yeah, I loved the 80's hair rock stuff!

ditto to that.
I suppose whatever my band was playing at the time was my fav so there were too many to list.

"I play live as playing dead is harder than it sounds!"
Wow, great thread. I had to go to the wikipedia to get a list of everything released in that year. Once I did that, it was easy to remember what I was into then. All of these still get mucho play from me.
Tesla - Five Man Acoustical Jam
Black Crowes - Shake Your Money Maker
Faith No More - The Real Thing
Queensryche - Empire
And of course, the greatest metal album ever...
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
I literally wore out the cassette of the Tesla and Megadeth albums. I still remember where I was when I bought the both of them.
Man I feel like I was sired in the post war exuberance and raised in a cultural void. No wonder I have such a problem feeling the groove. Went to several sites to find the top tunes of 1960, my first year in high school only to find "The Twist" Chubby Checker, "Theme From a Summer Place" Percey Faith Orchestra
"Alley Oop" "Itsey Bitsey Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" etc. No wonder I am gutar challenged!!
One of the tunes I still like is "Only The Lonely" by Roy Orbison...must go now I think I hear the mailman coming with my brown envelope
Robbie
I had to think back a couple years to 1974. I distinctly remember buying and wearing out: Band On The Run by Paul McCartney & Wings.
A few others songs I remember include:
Fame, David Bowie
Black Water, Doobie Brothers
Ballroom Blitz, Sweet (I just heard this the other day!)
You're Sixteen, Ringo Starr
Smokin' In The Boys Room, Brownsville Station
Margaret, interesting you note Queen and Ted Nugent as first concerts. I remember seeing Queen in 1976 after Bohemian Rhapsody came out. Saw Ted Nugent sometime in 1976 or 1977.
I remember the Doobie Bros the most. China Grove etc... I'm not sure which song came out which year...
"China Grove" was 1973.
Well we all shine on--like the moon and the stars and the sun.

When I started Grammar School, Hey Jude (Beatles, of course) was #1 ......that would be September 1968.....

I caught Styx in concert in my sophmore year...think it was 1979, at the Northern Ariziona University College campus in Flagstaff...they were just getting big.
Must have been cool to see them at school dances.... :)
I may grow old, but I'll never grow up.
Some faves:
Frankenstein Edgar Winter Group
We're an American Band Grand Funk RR
Give me Love George Harrison
Brother Louie Stories
Time in a Bottle Jim Croce
China Grove Doobies
Highway Star and Space Truckin' Deep Purple
but the real favorite was none other than ...
Smoke on the Water

Perhaps a little earlier than freshman in high school, but I'll say "Willie The Pimp" by Frank Zappa.
"A cheerful heart is good medicine."
I'm not sure if was my freshman year but Sultan's of Swing by Dire Straits was one of my favorites.
Hmmm...
Back then I was just getting into Rush (Fly By Night and 2112 and their just-released Moving Pictures), and ACDC just released "For Those About to Rock"...
I remember about half of our Grade 11 class (but not me  ) skipping a day of school to drive 2 hours and see a Rush show in Winnipeg. Turns out they haven't been back since. If they ever do play here again, I'll skip work if I have to in order to see the show.
