LOL!! I love it, too, Nick! Only shouldn't that be Stormy Sunday? :D

I went through my CD's, too, and these are the female artists I own......

Bonnie Raitt
Sue Foley
Sheryl Crow
Eva Cassidy
Janis Joplin
Deborah Coleman
Patsy Cline
Allison Krauss
Cyndi Lauper
Marcia Ball
June Carter Cash
Melissa Etheridge
The Pretenders (Chrissy Hynde)
Billie Holiday
Tracy Chapman
Sophie B. Hawkins
Etta James
Maria Muldaur
Molly & The Heymakers
Annie Lennox (Eurythmics)
Gretchen Wilson
Heart
Joan Baez
Joni Mitchell
Squirrel Nut Zippers (Katherine Whalen, vocals, banjo)
Mary Chapin Carpenter
Patti Scialfa (Bruce Springsteen's wife and rhythm guitar player)
Phoebe Snow
The Roches (Maggie, Terre & Suzzy Roche)
Sweethearts of the Rodeo
Wanda Jackson
Delaney & Bonnie

I have probably five times as many by male artists and, of those, I actually own one Jeff Beck, but no Rush!

OH! Almost forgot the most important CD! A compilation, 3 disc set, 'Ladies of the Blues', which contains music from...

Mamie Smith
Lucille Hegamin
Sara Martin
Eva Taylor
Esther Bigeou
Alberta Hunter
Ma Rainey
Ethel Waters
Clara Smith
Bertha 'Chippie' Hill
Bessie Smith
Hattie McDaniel
Pearl Dickson
Bessie Tucker
Lizzie Miles
Victoria Spivey
Lilian Glinn
Lottie Beaman
Hattie Hart
Mary Johnson
Edith Johnson
Alice Moore
Mattie Delaney
Rosa Henderson
Mildred Bailey
Lucille Bogan
Georgia White
Lil Johnson
Rosetta Howard (with Harlem Hamfats)
Merline Johnson
Trixie Smith
Blue Lu Barker
Billie Holiday
Ida Cox
Memphis Minnie
Wee Bea Booze
Rosetta Tharpe
Ada Brown (with Fats Waller)
Dinah Washington (with Lionel Hampton)
Helen Humes
Julia Lee

One reason I have so many female artists is so that I could take from each of them what I needed (and still need) to create my own voice and style.

I just noticed something strange - looking through my CD collection, I counted how many were by female artists. It didn't take long. ONE! Blondie's greatest hits....

Marilyn doesn't have that many either - Dolly Parton's greatest hits, Cher's greatest hits, The Carpenters hits, and two albums by the Corrs - unplugged and "in blue." Of course, we've got lots of tracks by female singers on various albums, but very few actual female artists.

Strange indeed!

:D :D :D

Vic

I went through my "collection" I did a little bit better than Vic.
Heart
Alison Krouss
Janis Joplin
Anne Ross
Billie Holiday
Carol King
Linda Ronstandt
Dolly Partin--( I think that belongs to Mrs Jarvis)
And a few others I cant find at this time.

Most of them I have because they play or sing some Kick butt music

Personally, my choices are mostly lyric driven. I have a lot of the same Cd's Elektrablue has, but because the words spoke to me somehow. The same goes for Springsteen, Billy Joel, and one of my faves, Bernie Taupin. It's not so much about gender, but about a lyric I can relate to.
When I play them, I just change the gender, or not.

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

I do pay attention to the lyrics, but generally I go by the general feel of the music and the vocal quality of the performer. I want to hear some emotion in the music as well as the vocal. Janis Joplin with Big brother doing "Summertime" Really does me in 8)

Edit: "Ball and Chain" Is even better

2nd Edit: Stormy Weather does the same thing for me that "Summer Time" and "Ball and Chain" does for me and Its way before rock and roll  The same intensity and it still rocks :D

Stuff like this is gonna ruin GN.

lol, one of the best posts I've seen.

I have trouble getting into female singers. I feel slightly...feminine, singing along to them.

Somebody posted a link on a board a while back to a video of a song by "Sons of Butcher" that made me LMAO. (Don't look it up if bad language offends you.) Somehow I kinda doubt that band has a big female fan flock following them...

I guess that must just be a male thing! I don't feel at all "masculine" when I sing along to a "male" song! And, as Katreich said, if I like the lyrics but they are gender specific, I'll change them (or not, depending on the song) to be the "feminine" voice.

EDIT: This just made me think of the old Temptations/Mary Wells (Supremes) tune(s)... 'My Guy' and 'My Girl', a perfect example of changing the gender voice.

I fared slightly better when I looked through the cassette collection. Albums there by Belinda Carlisle, the Go-Gos, Roxette, Eurythmics, Supremes, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin.

LOL - I haven't even looked at the old vinyl collection yet!

Actually I think if you manage to find that particular thread, you'll find it was originated by none other than OWA. I remember talking to her one night on MSN, she was quite taken with them and was working on one of their songs! And yes it was the one with the very naughty words.......
