The Roche Sisters
Y'all just keep pulling up people that I LOVE!! I've been a Roche Sisters fan for years and years and years! Love their harmonies and their lyrics! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJcY4zNzAag&feature=related In fact, I was searching for a particular song of theirs yesterday to post but couldn't find it. (It's "The Married Men" which led to my other post "The Married Man Song"!) I have the mp3, but I can't find a video. So, here's a link to the uploaded mp3! http://www.FreeUploadShare.com/DOWNLOAD/a53fc946/The Married Men.mp3

Don't know if it'll last, but love Amy Winehouse so far.
Videos please.
She's mesmerizing, Amy Winehouse: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aygAu1x2uQo
Hadn't heard her . . . just of her.
What I heard of her was not good.
What I hear is fantastic.
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
Her voice reminds me of Shirley Bassey....... http://youtube.com/watch?v=gnZiPhaBqF8

Now, that was delightful!
Great video. Clever concept. (It said in the comments she was 60 when the video was made)
I'm getting a kick out of these.
I think I'll spend the rest of my day here. (Screw everything else)

oh yeah, I remember loving shirley bassey whenn I was yay high......she may well explain my aversion to most women singers who don't sound a lil gruff, lol.
I can't wait to hear your recordings.
You're setting yourself up for expectations of sounding like a foghorn.
I know Vic has heard you.
(Hey Vic, PM me and give me the poop on Scrybe)
I guess my beginning post of Sirens is apt then.
I like the soprano sounds.
The last 30 seconds of Unchained Melody sounds like cat wailing to you
but to me it . . . sends me. (Isn't that a song? Darling, you send me?)
Anyway, umm
Oh damn.

I like the "gruff" ones, too! Sweet has it's place, but there's nothing like a growwwl! :D

'Gruff' is good - Like Kim Carnes, Stevie Nicks, & Bonnie Tyler....
I usually prefer 'Dreamy' though :D

Billie Holiday:

I love the sound of Billie Holiday's voice. She didn't have much of a range but the emotion that she put into it was incredible despite the discussions in another thread that claims that there is no emotion in playing.
Somebody above mentioned Neko Case, I've only heard her before as part of The New Pornographers. I didn't know that she had some solo work - I'll have too listen to more of that.
The whole power pop movement seems to be largely female vocals. In a similar style to The New Pornographers I have been listening to Metric which features the vocals of Emily Haines. There's some of their songs here - http://www.ilovemetric.com/media.html

I fear a foghorn would be more tuneful and, uh, toneful.
I'm not even sure of my range (really gotta start paying some attention to "trying to develop my voice" as opposed to just accepting my failings there, lol), but I seem to manage to hit (some) of the right notes in Johnny Lang's tunes, Nina Simone, and maybe Bonnie Raitt is about as high as I seem to get (when she's singing low, that is, lol). Vic hasn't heard me sing, only my geetar plucking, but the one person who has heard me sing this century commented on my voice being "surprisingly deep". Ah well, it seems the microphone shall soon confirm or deny this. The atonality/monotony will definitely be confirmed, though.
and Hypoborea......thank you so much for saying Billie Holiday lacks much range (gives me a lil bit more hope). And if you like Emily Haines, might I recommend her song Doctor Blind? Its bloody brilliant, imho, with a great movement in the piano (random 2/4 bars make it a little jolting, but in a good way, really compliments the lyrics). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij5CXOb1WE8 I have the album this is off and, imho, its a bit repetitive and lacking, but this is a stand out track, for me.
Pink Martini!
Love this band....
Have yet to hear a song by them I don't like.
They do classical, jazz, latin beat, French, Spanish, English.... and some things that I don't even know, I'm sure.

My personal favorite of theirs is their rendition of Ravel's Bolero (No vocals).

LOL!
I almost posted that song!
Wanted to show their 'international' appeal though....
Glad you threw that up Greg; With the one I put up, it shows their range pretty well.
The first song I heard by them was a cocktail jazzy thing in French!
