Most of the metal bands I see are playing ESP or Ibanez guitars, and those are really made from the same basic materials as a stratocaster. The only difference is that the strat has a pickguard (and different pickups, etc).

Anyway, you plug it into a pedal and that takes care of the metal distortion. A friend of mine has a Telecaster that he plays metal with. John 5 plays a Tele. Iron Maiden play Strats.

Hey there OWA,
I own an American Fat Strat.

With the P/U Selecter up (neck and neck/middle P/U) I can get clean tones with the volume max'd or close to max'd then if the put the switch down or Middle/Bridge - Bridge pickups I have to roll off the volume to keep it clean.

Mine also has the S1 switch which kicks in the bridge to a Humbucker "state" if you will. Hence "FAT" Strat and the HUMMER Stays on no matter where the switch is.. it just turns on either the middle or neck in the series.

One thing about that Double Hummer Strat. I wouldn't go there. Just my opinion. Strats are all about the single coils. I think getting an H-H Strat defeats the purpose of what makes a strat a strat... Not to mention the longer scale neck etc...<shrug>

The weight thing.

Most LP's and LP types are a big ol slab of Mahogony (which is Heavy dense wood). Yes some have Figured Maple tops, but there's still a big ol slab of mahogony underneath... also most LP's are SOLID Necks vs Bolt ons like the strat which I'm sure adds some weight at least a few ounces here and there. Additionally on a strat most of the bodies are made lighter woods like ash or alder wood and... I think...more of the body in a strat has been routered out to make way for the electronics than on an LP type guitar, so since the LPs have more wood and they're made of a heavier wood..... well :)

Hope that helps.

Mostly I'm wanting something with a good crunch but light(weight wise).

Been looking at Squiers because I'm on a limited budget. Anyone have opinions on : this or Squiers, or fat strats in general? And how much lighter are they than Les Pauls or Explorers?

Also curious as to how high I can get the volume on one before it clips. My Les Paul starts overdriving the amp around 4-5, not expecting anyone here to know that one though.
