Why do a lot of guitar players have GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) compared to other musicians? Not saying that all guitar players do and all other musicians don't but on average it seems that way.
Yeah...guess we're all guilty of that in one aspect or another. It took me Donkey's Years to come up with my current wife. But now I'm lookin' forward to another twenty with the gal! Guitars are much the same...even to the point of the original shape being "like a woman"!
BUT (at the sake of another knot on my head via "the rolling pin")...I now limit my collecting to just guitars. She's okay with that...

Wife (or Woman) Acquisition Syndrome is a very risky thing. Or so I'm told.

Let's see:
"ricochet"..."rolling pin"...doctor.
Nope...no ricochet's here. I gotta behave myself...or I'll go broke apologising. No glancing blows, either. She's a mad Hungarian, dahlink!
Certainly, GAS has gone to EXTEREMES in THIS house. No, actually, the house next door. We've gutted it and after the renovations...a whole lot more GAS is going into a studio in there. She's afflicted, too. This woman's finally got some real time to herself...so GAS has hit her with a vengeance...external law degree study for Entertainment Management..."so the three boys won't get robbed".
I don't know HOW...but I ain't lost much hair as of yet!
But I do have some SERIOUS advice for those afflicted with GAS: if you can manage it...at least arrange everything so your ex¢ur$ion$ into the realm of "going brokeland" are tax-deductible??? I haven't been in the USA for a bit...but from what I remember...deductions can't come off "different" income. If you make $5K doing gigs/teaching/etc...that's all you have to deduct from. Basically, you'll need to compartmentalise your music-related income and outgoings. See an accountant...because, at the very least, it'll float and hold it's own until you buy more GAS and...
Come to think of it...Ric...ask your accountant that if you piped a composition you've done in your waiting room...would your professional med practice then be "entitled" for all sorts of music-related GAS???

(Ya may well owe me a bottle of brandy and some Cubans for this one, Ric!)

If I piped my music into the waiting room, I'd have lots more time to play my guitar.

I know guys who have Hammond (organ) Acquisition Syndrome. That fills up the house fast!

And always looking for organ donors too.... I wonder if they're in cahoots with Dr Ric?
Right. That's what they call it on the Hamtech List.
They get LAS for Leslies, too.

I knew a girl who had SAS (Shoe Acquisition Syndrome)
A guy who had DAS (Dvd Acquisition Syndrome)
Another who had BAS (Babe Acquisition Syndrome) also known as LAS (Lady Acquisition Syndrome)
And personally, besides for GAS, I also have CAS (CD Acquisition Syndrome).

Guitars for me have always had that new-toy factor thing going on. Even though I currently claim to be GAS free, I still might get me a cheapo semi-hollow next year.
Golf and baseball are the opposite. I almost never get new clubs, gloves or bats. I'm still pissed that my wooden driver and 3-wood both broke on me 15 years ago. I'm still mad that I can't keep a car from getting creamed when they're nearly paid off (jerks running stop signs..TWICE) and another that WAS paid off, but rusted out. My catcher's mitt and 1b glove were relics from the 70's, but both worked well ('specially the 1b mitt). I gave them away when I "retired" from baseball. I still have my OF glove from '86 that worked well last time I played in '06. My infielder's glove is the only modern one I tried and liked. If I play again, it will stay with me for quite some time. Wish I kept the 1b mitt.....just in case. The catcher's mitt needed to die. <sniff sniff>
(I remember seeing Walt Weiss's game glove on TV once. It looked like it had been a big dog's chew toy.)
Point is, once I get something I like a lot, I hang on to it for as long as I can. With guitars, though, it can never hurt to get another and another......... Never will get rid of 4 of the ones I have though. The others I could care less about now.

Which one of the 12 steps is that one, Roy?

Certainly on topic but not guitar related....
I play hockey and I coach youth hockey. Between my son and I, there are an obscene amount of hockey sticks in the house. Now, use to be that hockey sticks were cheap. But nowadays you can spend $250 on one. Yes. That's not a typo. And to justify the costs, they come out with a new model like every 6 months.
Composite sticks with different curves designed to woo the young player into GAS. The thing is, the older the players get, the rougher the game. SO- its possible that your kids walks into the rink with a very expensive stick and in one quick moment....SNAP! And just as quick will be your need to run to the pro shop to replace the stick.
Don't even get me started on the cost of skates.
