Thanks for the replies. I've thought it about it some more and I'm just going to keep going with what I have. I guess I was just swayed a bit by the marketing and the fact that Guitar Rig is a nice integrated hardware / software solution. Yes, I've already got Logic Express and to use it I've got an external audio input (Presonus FireBox) and a MIDI pedal (Behringer FCB1010) to make backing tracks. I use my tube amp to play over them. The idea of an integrated solution was kind of appealing. I'm not sure that I could take my current digital setup to a jam / workshop so easily.

Another thing that made GR3 seem appealing was the integrated looper but after some digging around I've found a free looper that will work as an AudioUnit (means that it will integrate nicely with many Mac apps including Logic). SooperLooper - http://www.essej.net/sooperlooper/

I will have a look at Revalver maybe later next year - maybe get the demo. I understand that it too is available as an AudioUnit and so will plug into Logic.

Again thanks for the advice

If it's for home usage, go with Peavey ReValver. You can download the fully functioning demo on the Peavey website. The only limitations are that you cannot save presets and you'll get one second of hiss every minute or so. But it's free and it's IMHO the best modeler of the moment. The effects section of GR is superior, so if you get that one you can always mix and match. :D

I run the Guitar Rig 2 AU plugin inside Logic Express.
It's great. Tons of cool presets and a simple intuitive interface that makes modifying them easy.
I have a PodXT that I never use anymore. I find the Guitar Rig modeling much superior.
Another advantage to Guitar Rig over a Pod type device: while you're hearing the amp simulation while you're playing, you're not actually recording it (digitally). It's just the dry guitar signal that's actually recorded in the DAW. Which is a huge plus. You can always experiment with different sims later, change the amount or timing of delay after recording, etc.
(There's a way to do something similar with the Pod but it's too convoluted for me.)

Sorry, I've only recorded digitally. I've never owned an amp so I can't answer how the analog vs. digital stacks up.
And like you, I've only read about the floorboard and listened to demos. But Native Instruments make other great hardware so it's probably pretty good.

If you didn't need the floorboard...
You use Logic Express right? The latest version, 8, has a beefed up guitar amp sim, Guitar Amp Pro, that's very good as well. The big disadvantage with it vs. GR is the amp sims get built as a series of discrete inserts. A given amp sim will be: The Amp insert, a Reverb insert, an EQ insert, an Echo insert, for example. It makes editing the parameters a pain.
With GR it's all daisy chained inside one insert and you look at a rack mounted view of the whole chain in one window. The editing is much simpler.

Hope that helps a little. Happy hunting!
:)

Does anybody have any experience with Guitar Rig? I've been taking a look at it lately and it seems to be a pretty amazing software/hardware combo. I'm thinking about using it for home practice now and maybe later for jams (there are real world musicians using it for live performance).

It actually turns out to be pretty cost effective for what it's got if you've already got a computer you can use. You can get the software / floorboard bundle for $340 ($399 and then 15% off at Music123). If you consider the cost of a good audio interface, and a looper, and midi I/O, and a floorboard, plus the amp and effects modelling then it's a lot cheaper.

I've listened to the demos and played about with it some at GC but that's not quite the same thing as living with it long term. Does anybody have any experience with Guitar Rig (3 or earlier versions) or any of the other similar pieces of software? How was the move from analog to digital (I've got a tube amp and some analog effects)? How about using it in a live situation (jams, workshops, maybe even performance)? Any regrets? Anything you'd do differently?

Thanks
