I got a Squier standard "Black and Chrome" Tele from the fender store for $199. This is a great beginners guitar ( and also for anyone else wanting a low cost, good quality guitar). Not only is it cool looking, it plays well, stays in tune, and has a good tone. I've had mine since spring of 2004 and I'm still amazed at this little gem :D

I'd recommend looking at the Washburn Idol series. I have a WI 64 that's a great guitar: Buzz Feiten tuning system, grover tuners, the Voice Contour Control system that lets you dial the dual humbuckers in or out for single coil sound. Tune-o-matic bridge, set neck and mahogany body. It's a versatile guitar. The sticker price is around $699, but the street price probably comes in right around $500.

Mine's a transparent red. I love this guitar. It's the one I'm playing in my avatar.
