CBS introduced a number of "innovative" new features, and also attempted to complete and implement some of Leo's unfinished ideas. Many of these came off quite badly.

True of the early 70s examples - but I've owned both a '58 and my present '78, and I can honeslty say I prefer the latter. Oh it has its oddities (that 3-bolt neck plate) but it sounds <U>wonderful</U> and plays like butter. It also has a nice habit of staying in tune ;-)

'78 isn't quite vintage yet, is it!.  :wink:  <br><br>Yes, it was mostly very late 60's to mid 70's models that suffered. But even among those, there are a few examples of good -- and certainly beloved -- ones.<br><br>I have an early ('82?) G&amp;L with a 3-bolt Micro-tilt neck. It too works very well and rarely goes out of tune. It's my tried and true favorite.]]></content:encoded>

I was hoping Nick would come up with a witty retort to that.  Knowing Nick he probably has no less than 20 guitars at any one time. I am going to put thicker gauge strings on it upside-down so I can play it right-handed and hopefully put in a Texas Special single-coil pickup at the bridge.]]></content:encoded>

It was because the engineering and quality took a sharp nosedive when CBS took over design and production. CBS introduced a number of "innovative" new features, and also attempted to complete and implement some of Leo's unfinished ideas. Many of these came off quite badly.<br><br>Similar things happened to Gibson under Norlin.]]></content:encoded>
