First, lol at the jokes in this topic.
Anyway,
I know what he means by guitarists being too analytical to 'enjoy' music.
I've noticed that about me long ago.
I see other people groovin' to a song, while I'm listening to all the individual instruments and the production techniques
and the tone and timing and BLAH, blah, blah...
I've often felt robbed or cheated when it comes to listening to music.
As I know that I'll NEVER be able to JUST listen to it as a whole like it was meant to be. :(
I've noticed that about myself lately. I've always 'listened' to it "too much" I guess. I still groove to it, but lately, lets say if I'm listening to All Along the Watchtower(Hendrix version). Sometimes I like focusing my attention on Hendrix's bass (he played the bass parts on the studio version), instead of the lead guitar. I don't know why, it just happens. Or I might start trying to figure it out if it's in 3rd or 4th time. The 3rd/4th time still boggles my mind though. As for being robbed or cheated, you aren't, and I'm not either. But then again, who am I to say? I could become 'as bad' as you are someday, lol.
I've also noticed that 'Normal' people don't really listen to lyrics at all.
They rarely know anything other than the chorus or hooky parts.

Next time you see a non-musician singing mindlessly along with a song, then exclaiming that they really like it after it's
done.... Look at them and say; Yeah....? What's it about????
 They wont be able to answer you.
Lol, very good point on the 'normal people' statement. It's true.

Kinda makes you think of writing songs entirely made up of mindless chorus'.

Ken

Hi Ken,

Ain't that the truth... :D It always makes me smile when I read serious discussions about the art of songwriting with all sorts of rules, guidelines and opinions about structure and form. You've still got to remember the intended listener, and put something catchy in...

I think it was Vic Lewis that pointed out on one such thread that successful songs were really mostly about the 'hook' - whatever that happened to be for the song. Sometimes that's just a good lick or an easily hummed sound. Maybe a few words or a key phrase that catches the ear, but it's just as likely to be a "Sha na na" or a "Bop bangaloo.." as a carefully constructed piece of story telling.... :(

I have a friend who studied a the local Conservatorium and played in a classical duo. He says that "analytical" thing makes it really hard for him to just enjoy popular music on the radio as he keeps hearing stuff that he thinks should be done differently. Whereas his young wife, who doesn't play, just bops along and enjoys it all. He reckons he needs to re-learn simple enjoyment from her! 8)

Cheers,

Chris

Hi,

I was listening to Australian guitarist Jeff Lang being interviewed on the radio yesterday (excellent player BTW) and he was asked about how he felt about getting praise in international guitar mags, and from other players.

He seemed to be a very down to earth guy and said that all he hoped for was to keep on being able to make a living doing what he loved. He also said that guitar players tended to get too analytical when listening to others play and tended to disect what was going on instead of just enjoying the music. Whereas the average audience member either likes what they hear and responds to it emotionally in some way, or they don't. They don't need to know all the how and whys.

He summed up guitar players listening to others by quoting the joke:

Q: How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?

A: 50! One to change the bulb and forty-nine to say "I could have done that...."

After hearing him play, I stopped on the way home and bought one of his CDs.
