Yeah, I agree that P90's would be a good choice for a slide guitar.
Most hollowbody slide players prefer P90's over HB's.

I had P90's in my SG.
I thought they were a bit bassy.
A bit too much on the low end for my liking.
I attribute that to my Fender tuned ears though.
I have played vintage Gibbo ES-125's w/P90's and really liked them (for nice clean sounds).

You have HB's, so I think you'll probably love P90's.

It's the P90/P100 single pup version that most like for slide, tho P90 is the better of the two. It's such a nice hot pup for that dirty tone. The shorter scale on the Epi is a little better for lapsliding as well. Definitely think you'd need to raise the action to 'get good slide.'

And I seem to recall it had a slightly wider neck than I'm used to - which isn't necessarily a bad thing for slide. Thanks for the memory jog Greg! Oh - and price-wise, it's about £50 cheaper than the Squier Tele.

As Epis are available in the UK, and occasionally even at reasonable or sale prices (there's even some evidence in Vic's links), these might be reasonable alternatives to the guitars Vic is considering. A Tele with P90s would be great for bottleneck, as well as general playing. Here are another couple of suggestions I've heard make great lower cost bottleneck or lapsteel guitars:

with P100 (not quite a P90, but no hum)
