Sounds like you tried a lot of options. Just curious - what didn't you like about the Dot Studio compared to the Dot, and what do you like better about the SA-500? The biggest thing for me was that the Dot Studio didn't have seperate tone and volume controls for each pickup. I have to admit I wasn't really sure why, or if, I would need them, but I wanted to make sure they were there if I needed them. I loved the Dot. I prefer the covered HB's and the Cherry finish. The Studio I looked at was in Orange (awful IMO).

I knew the Yamaha was a good option after reading a great review in my favourite guitar mag. I can make that review available to you if you like. When I picked one up and played it I was really happy that I could make a good shot of learning to play with it. I rate all Yamaha guitars quite highly anyway.

I only ever found one Artcore in the stores and it was a hollow body (ES175 type or similar) and that just wasn't what I was after.

+1 to checking out the Yamahas and the Ibanez Artcores.

A year or so back I got a dose of 'Dot fever' but ended up drifting towards the Artcores and Yamahas as well. Nothing specific against the Dots though, and I would have been happy with any of those 3 I think.

Due to a shortage of funds at the time, I ended up buying a cheapie brand instead of any of them. Although it's not at all bad, and worth what I paid, I still occasionally kick myself for not saving up a bit more and going for one of the others instead. :cry:

Good luck with the choice. If you can play them all they should make the choice for you.

So after reading many good reviews and really liking it (of course) I settled on a Yamaha SA500

It sits between the Dot and the Dot Studio, price wise. It is also available in black.
