Laz,

Maybe that's a healthy weight for you. Sounds like you are getting your share of exercise. Of course, it's still important to eat healthily. And I believe staying well-hydrated is one of the best things we can do for our bodies and health.

Margaret,

Very kind of you to say so, but my fighting weight is under 200#.

I need to get away from the desk job and go back to being a starving musician. That'll work!

"Starving musician?"

I knew there was part of the job description that I was missing out on...

I went up a couple of pounds since I first posted and said, something's got to give, so, it was the beer. I  quit  drinking  around  February  and really started to focus. First was the beer    , then I started with my lunch habits and now I started working out.

With that said, I'm now down to 188.2 lbs. Just over ten lbs. lost! (< edited > because I'm an idiot)

I have to use the next hole in my belt. WHich is now funny looking because of the wear and tear in that old spot.

We talk about our exercise programs here. Healthy eating is the other half of the equation, so we should be working on improving those habits, as well.

The weekend is past and it's time to report on the weekend's assignment. To refresh your memory:
Here's the assignment for the weekend:
Think about the food choices you make and focus on improving one. Then come back and tell us all about the best food choice you made over the weekend.

What did you put in your mouth this past weekend that was a good and healthy choice? Or at least an improvement over a past choice?

I was travelling Saturday and engaged in some junk food. I paid for it by not feeling so great that night and the next morning.

To help get back on track Sunday, I ate much healthier foods including a bunch of fresh blueberries, a handful of pistachios, and half a butternut squash. Tasty! :D

Your turn...........what did you have that was good and good for you?

I dont know that I ate something particularly healthier, but I have been watching my portion sizes again. I also started walking again. My kids and I joined a gym yesterday.

OK, I'm stuck at a plateau.

I've lost about 25 lbs over the past six months. I could stand to lose another 25, and accept that it will probably get more difficult as I go down. The next 10 shouldn't be so hard, though. I've been stuck here for several weeks.

I'm walking at least 2.5 miles every day, and more like 3.5 miles most days, broken up between the treadmill in the mornings and walking the dogs in the evenings. Since I baby bad knees along, I can't increase my distance any more at this point, and picking up the pace to a run is totally out of the question for this chick. I also occasionally get a 2-3 mile bike ride in, but not on a regular basis.

I'm making healthy food choices and rarely eating anything after about 7 or 8 pm. I don't think I can cut back my food intake further without feeling deprived.

So what do I do next?

I'm wondering if doing strength training (handweights, resistance equip) might be the next move, to increase muscle mass and strength. Do you think this will help? I may have to join a health club for their equipment, an expense I'm loathe to incur, but I don't know how else to get unstuck.

Any advice or ideas??? Maybe a good kick in the pants? :D

I don't want to get hung up on the numbers on the scale, but I'd like to get off this plateau and keep my motivation up.

Thx!

Margaret

Ok .. stepping up to the plate . . .. a bit late, but better late than never, right?

I'm up over 270. I'd been at 250 for a long time and when i was doing martial arts I still had a lot of fat around my middle, but my legs were pretty much solid muscle.

But now, I'm just feeling flabby everywhere ;(

More to the point, had my annual physical the other day and the doctor gave me a no nonsense "Lose weight now" speech.

So ... here I am.

I have no idea what I'm going to do to try and lose weight. My eating habits are actually pretty decent (with the exception of portion size). My biggest problem is that I really don't exercise at all anymore. But I have no idea where to fit that into my day, and I really don't have the money for a gym membership even if I had the time.

I guess I'll go for a walk today.

Re: Paying form a gym membership.

I use my curl bar, two singles, a pair of stairs (working calves and such) and one of those big balls. You can do a bunch of great exercises with that ball. An exercise book usually comes with it. Wal-Mart carries them. Yeah, it would be great to have all that nice equipment, but I see pretty good results without them.

I need to start running, but a walk will get your heart pumping.

Just some thoughts.........

There is a workout routine called Home-Grown Muscle (HGM) that is very popular with MesHealth online.

The first bit, Phase One, is great for losing weight. It works for women too, despite being on a "Men's Health" site. It is a pretty brutal workout, but it has great results when used with a diet that has calorie intake slightly below your maintenance level.

It uses compound moves, without many machines, mostly free weights. If anyone has any lifting experience and has platuead with their weight loss, or just wants that extra kick, I definitly recommended this.

Indeed! It is a fact* that your body burns up calories just trying to maintain muscle mass. So by adding muscle, you actually speed up your metabolism. You don't need to get big muscles, either.

*re the "fact" - I read it on the internet, so it must be true! J/k. Really, I've read it in respectable publications. Go for it!

OK, about me: I biked 25 miles in 90 degree heat on Sunday. Actually felt good at the time. Been sweating ever since! But I'm still nowhere near I need to be. And my wife's bugging me to go get a physical, since I'm turning 40 in two weeks ... ugh.
