I've replaced a ton of pickups and I must say that OVERALL I'm most impressed with Seymour Duncan. However, there are variances as follows:

- For single coils I have yet to find a better sounding pup than a Fender Texas Special. I am currently trying out a set of Fender SCNs, and I've heard great things aboutt he Lawrence noiseless single coils.

- My overall favorite humbucker is the Gibson 500T, but it is only a bridge humbucker and only for a guitar that can handle it (I have one in my Hamer Standard). Not a Strat or Tele or Super Strat pickups. Definitely not a hollow-body pickup.

- I have had moderate success with DiMarzio pups, but I do find the Duncans have a fuller sound. It is, however, much easier to find and equip a guitar with a tremolo with Dimarzios. Also, my '51 would't accept a Duncan humbucker becuase the screw brackets were too big for the route.

- Lawrence humbuckers are pretty good too. I've used a 510R for a while.

- GFS has some decent sounding pickups - especially their single coils.

- I also have a Fender DH-1 humbucker in my Strat and it is a very nice sounding pickup. You can get lucky and find a number of Fender humbuckers for $15 - 30 in the used market, so it is worth looking into.

I want to make two votes: Other (GFS), and most likely Dimarzio.

In my '51 I have a GFS Mean 90 in the bridge and a GFS alnico staggered strat pup in the neck. The Mean 90 is beefier than the stock humbucker (more lower-mids) and the strat pup is bright and chimey and very articulate, unlike the stock pup which was lifeless and muddy on my guitar.

In my Artcore I replaced the "okay" stock humbuckers with GFS Dream 90s. They sound really nice in the semi-hollow body; lots of P90 growl and good biting treble too.

However, the Artcore and '51 are now too similar, so I've been thinking about going back to humbuckers in the Artcore. Most likely I will get the Dimarzio "PAF Joe" for the neck and either the Dimarzio Air Norton or Breed for the bridge. However, I've heard great things about the Duncan 59s, so I intend to give them a look over as well.
