I'd love to have the skill of Hendrix or EVH but I never liked Van Halen music much either. I realize from a technical standpoint Cobain wasn't much of a guitar player but the music Nirvana made was great, at least to me.

Sometimes I don't really know what I like it just seems to happen and it's rarely because of what the guitar player does. The unsung hero in my life is Brian May though, because I listened to him from a very very young age and he's still with me. I don't really know how to play a lot of his solos, but somehow just in the back of my mind he's always there. I have started to learn more of his stuff (little attempts here and there) but I dont think I'll ever capture his sound so it leaves me feeling a bit like "Why bother?".
