Also, I recall that rappers often use damping devices near the nut of their axe to prevent unwanted noise. I'm not gonna do that, but I've noticed tapping sounds nicer if you mute the string with your "fretting hand" or are fretting complimentary notes with that hand. I take it muting is something which always needs focus and isn't just being caused by my amateurishness?

One thing...I've read (years back) that resting your thumb on the neck (a la Jordan in much of that vid) improves accuracy, and my own experiments support this. But I can't help thinking not resting the thumb in this way gives you more freedom to maneouvre, so I've been making a point not to rest the thumb (doesn't seem to hold SJ back on electric, but AF gets better acoustic results not resting he thumb than I do when resting my thumb....tho that's a loaded Q!). Any tips for improving accuracy without resting my thumb on the neck? Or general observations/suggestions about the pros and cons of using that technique when tapping? then I see videos like that and forget about a lot of other acoustic and clean/electric tappers.
I always try the rudiment tapping stuff and cannot get the sound I want.

I can't tap. I can't jitterbug either.
I can waltz and tango.
I can play two note harmonic scales and love double stops.
but I can't tap. :evil:

Sara, sorry I can't help more, I can only do simple EVH style tapping, (never thought I'd refer to EVH tapping as simple the 1st time I heard Eruption!), but there are a lot of tapping vids on Youtube that may help you out a bit.
