Tom Waits is #1 for me. He can do anything from touching ballads to crazy stuff. A real master craftsman at what he does.

I also like Randy Newman, Tom Lehrer and those who can do smart thought provoking stuff.

And on their good days, I can't go past Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen for the pictures that they can paint. I especially like Bob Dylan because when he's good he's absolutely brilliant, but he can be fairly dire too. To roughly quote something that Nick said here somewhere "If you want to see great lyrics you can't go past Bob Dylan. If you want to see bad lyrics you can't go past Bob Dylan...". So on his good days he inspires me, and on his bad days he gives me hope that my own songwriting might eventually get somewhere too... :wink:

But like Vic says, I've enjoyed some good songs from the locals here at GN too.
