I'll make one reply to you, Vic, then leave further discussion to others.

Smokers, in general, do not consider the effects that their smoke is having on others - that is being inconsiderate.
Many smokers, when visiting a non-smoker's home, do not even bother to ask if the host minds them smoking - that is inconsiderate, to the point of rudeness.
The stench that their tobacco smoke leaves behind, not just on the surroundings, but on the clothes of everyone in the room, doen't bother smokers one iota - that's inconsiderate.
Having been a smoker, who gave up, I do consider smokers foolish.
When I was a kid, it was cool to smoke.....
When I was a Teenager, you weren't cool uinless you smoked!!!
I was one of those and, no, there were no health warnings when I started smoking either - in fact, there weren't any when I gave up. I was 21 when I gave up. I'd been smoking for about 10 years - now THAT was stupid.
As far as the health service is concerned, how many fewer chronically ill patients would they have to deal with every year, if none of them smoked? Don't forget that illness created by smoking is not like a cold, it doesn't go away in a few days - it tends to stay with you for life - and results in enormous - and ongoing - cost to the health service.
and I think a litlle cigarette smoke (passive smoking) is small beer indeed when compared to the pollutants put out by petrol engines every day.....
Sorry, but I'll take issue with you on that. Yes, cars do put out noxious gases - but directly into the atmosphere, where they are diluted by the movement of a large body of air. They have a far greater effect on the health of the earth than the individuals, nearby. Cigarette smokers, on the other hand, put their noxious gases into an enclosed space, where they can't be diluted by a large body of moving air and so have a direct impact on those in the immediate vicinity of the smoker.
Sorry, Vic, you'll never convince me - I'm a dyed-in-the-wool, card-carrying, born-again non-smoker.
