Chris C wrote I bought a Fender Hot Rod DeLuxe III valve amp. Without doing any knob twiddling at all, what comes out is pure honey in comparison. Wonderful.
Funny I've never really had much luck with mine although I am notoriously lazy when it comes to knob fiddling. The clean channel is pretty good but I rarely if ever play anything clean so it doesn't matter that much to me.
I need to find a smaller but really lighter amp than the HRD it is 45 lbs, which doesn't sound like alot , but it's more than I want to lug around for things like open mic's and practices.
I was thinking Blues Jr or maybe the Jet City like Roy has.

It's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll!
I looked at an HRD along time ago but wasn't impressed enough to part with the cash. Back when I got my Peavey Classic 30 I was hoping to pick one up but they didn't have one at GC and I liked the Peavey Classic 30 at the time so I bought it.
The Valve King was real easy to dial in. I put everything at 12 oclock and twisted. I have the texture set on AB all the way. I have the resonance button set for tight and the gain boost on. Not using the volume boost as it is plenty loud for in here without. Just a matter of pushing the buttons and asking myself which one sounds better. For the record, it sounded pretty good at 12 oclock and just got better with the tweeking.
I first thought that the Valve King is very compact Chris (cnev) and was going to offer that thought but it weights 45 lbs as well. :? It seems more the size of a Blues Junior and the Vakve King is alot cheaper than the HRD. It is the price of the Blues Junior (actually less) but 50 watts and IMO more gain than the HRD. I guess I'm just a Peavey fan. (Or maybe cheap  ) But they are more the sound I like. I've read poor reviews on their clean sound but for me ...... a non issue as well.
I would have checked out a Jet City if the store I went to had one.

My Jet City still has a 12" speaker. 39 pounds.
My Super Champ Deluxe is only 24 pounds. 15W, but it's not pure tube. It's hybrid. One tube in preamp and two in output and some digital voicing getting thrown in somewhere before the output tubes. Has a few voicings that I can imagine being of use for various songs. I used it as an output for my GT-10 for a long time. It had a pretty flat response for a tube amp if the dials were set a certain way. Added a bit of punchiness too.
The Blues Junior is only one channel, but plenty of folks gig with it in small places. Moon Rider does, IIRC. You'd have to do like with my Jet City and adjust the master/gain combination between some songs, I think. Perhaps James would jump in on this one.

I think my half stack goes about a buck fifty.

No wonder Pete Townsend's roadies pitched a fit about his 8 speaker cab.

I had an old Peavey 30 before I even started playing it had some issue and I ended up giving it to a guy in Charlotte. Wish I had it now.
I just find the HRD a bit harsh/brittle sounding plus too heavy to lug around, 20W should be plenty for open mics or practices.
Someday I will get a Marshall half stack or full but for now I need a smaller amp.

I've got the only one I've ever seen. They put it out while I was there and I happened to be hunting smaller watt amps. Sold.

That's the spank or quack they talk about, IIRC. It got smoothed out in the BDRI. I almost bought the HRD, but then saw and played the BDRI. Instant love. Pretty much the same story as the Jet City purchase, just a few years older. it was the first one I've seen.
There's always one there now, though. no problem finding my amp to try out new guitars. :)

I still gotta say ... Valve King sounds awsome! At least for me and my style of play ....... Now gotta say this too, the Windsor has EL34's like a Marshall. The Valve King has 6L6's. I love them both! Dunno what the difference is. I just love to play!
Oh . the Classic 30 has the little guys .... EL84's! I just realized .... my VYPYR 15 is the only amp I own that isn't a tube amp! I have been asimilated! The "Tube Borg"! Don't know where that came from ........ I'm not a Trekie or anything ..... :?

Yes, I like the sound of the sound of the Valve King very much, or is it your playing and the Munsters, which was awesome?!
Oh and cnev... you could take the Groove Tubes out of your HRD and get it to sound more like a Blues Deluxe. I sold my HRD because it was harsh, and bought a second BDRI, but it didn't sound like my original USA Blues Deluxe, so I got it "Hot Rodded" by somebody, which then became a little loud and raunchy, and by then... the original speaker was gone - - - and it was partly filled with matching Groove tubes again  , so I just sold it as a Hot Rod tweed amp!!! It is doing fine, the buyer and all his buddies love it. But back to part of the topic, yeah cnev maybe you could de-tune your HOT thang a little?
Like a bird on the wire,

I have tried in my way to be free.
how could you do that to a BDRI?????
J/K
Some would swear that the HRD and the BDRI sound the same. They gots the same tubes, but it's a distinctly different tone. Both of them has like TR's Valve King. At least the power amp tubes anyhow. Not sure about preamps. All's I know is that in his very capable hands, the Valve Kings sounds awesome.
I wonder why my pretty orange thing didn't model a Peavy? It's certainly reputable and is part of tube amp Rock history without a doubt. :?:
Maybe I'll get to spend another $100 on an expansion pack and get some. :D
Toys are so much fun. Neil Youngs song, "I am a child" just became an ear-worm.

 Some very fine guitarists use them. Joe Satriani and the Nuge for a couple! Maybe they are just cheap too. (Nah! The models they play are as expensive as Marshalls)
Oh, and all my tube amps have 12AX7 preamp tubes.

i have a valveking 212 and love it.
it took a while to learn how to dial it in to how i wanted it, but they are great amps.
glad you are liking yours :D

Yes, I almost forgot. I knew somebody around here was playing through one. That extra speaker has to add some weight but I bet it sounds sweet! 8) That one is 100 watts isn't it? Mine is 50.

I wish I had opted for the 112. At the time I didn't realize how loud those things were :D
I never get to turn my amp up past number four even when gigging, I kind of feel I went a bit overkill
