I was just touching on this in another post.
The reason people are leaning toward the lower wattage tube amps is their ability to break up at lower volumes. So it might not be a tube amp that you want if your playing metal. That's my opinion. The more affordable tube amps tend to be more organic sounding and less articulate note to note. That's a generalization but I find it to be pretty true.
What I was saying in the other post is that the efficiency of the speakers has more to do with volume than wattage and
for every 10db gain (double perceived volume) you need a 10x multiplication of wattage. So a 100 watt amp is actually only twice as loud as a 10 watt amp. You'll want a rig capable of 110db. You'll have to do some homework to determine what will work as far as a speakers in conjunction with your amp.
I have a Jet City amp I just got and I've been singing its praises lately, it based on the solidano slo100. I'd seriously take a look at the carvin amps for an affordable tube amp that could handle the fast articulation. If you can find a used carvin bx50 or bx100 buy it! It's what zappa and vai used in the 80's and It is Marshall JCM800 good (seriously) and you can usually find them for less than $300USD.

I would probably recommend at least 30 Watts if you're going to rehearse with a band. Metal drummers play loud. For homeuse I would recommend 5 Watts.

I havn't played the Blackstar amp, but I do own a Blackstar HT-Dual and those amps were based on their pedals.
I'm rather new, so take everything I say with a grain of salt! :D

I personally love Blackstar, when it comes to low-end tube amps. I've tried both the HT-5 and the Stage 60, and I loved them. I got a good metal sound on both with my Fender USA Strat (with Seymour Duncan Hot Rail humbucker). Another possibility is maybe a Fender Hot Rod. They have really nice clean sounds and react well to pedals, I used one with an Electro-Harmonix Metal Muff and really liked it. A good pedal can really add a lot of versatility to an amplifier, so that's probably worth checking out (Ibanez Tube Screamers are really popular too, I believe).

I'd probably go with the HT-5, but going to a store and trying them out is your best option. I've tried some very good amplifiers I personally disliked and discovered a few I'd never heard about. For gigs I believe you can probably plug your amplifier into the PA/mic it up, but there's probably a few guys here who can tell you a lot more about it.

Alright, this may be a question that has been asked to death, but I'll ask anyways.

Anyone have any suggestions for relatively low watt tube combos? I'm essentially looking for a tube combo that can give me a punchy, low down metal sound. I do play a bunch of different styles, so it would be nice to find one that is versatile. I have the impression that most if not all tube amps can produce the basic blues/rock sound, so I guess all I really need to worry about is if it can handle metal. I've heard lots of good things about the Peavey Valveking and 6505. The valveking is a bit more in my price range.

Price bracket? Lets just say the cheaper the better. Stuff like Mesa/Boogie is pretty much completely out of my range.

One thing that I need clarification on:

How high does the wattage have to be so that I can play some small gigs/rehearse with a band? I got the impression that tube amps make a significantly bigger noise than solid-state amps of a comparable size.

(If this question has been answered before, please don't hesitate to point me in the direction of the thread!)
