Sorry to muddy the waters again.... but...

I've got a couple of different metronomes, and this is how I've found them.

Korg MA-30

Electronic metronome with a display screen that shows an 'arm' or 'pointer' that swings backwards and forwards at whatever tempo you select, at various beats per bar. It also has a tuner that plays selectable (and adjustable) tones that you can tune to. I don't user the tuner function as I have other tuners I prefer, but I assume that it works OK.

For:

Small and light. Easy to slip into pocket or guitar case. Can be propped onto a music stand for viewing. Volume control (not all the ones that I saw had this). Mute button, so it can be used with just the visual display and no sound at all. Can also be used with headphones (same small jack you'd find used on many computer headphones or similar).

Against:

Can seem to be not really gutsy enough to impose itself over the playing - depending on what you're playing and how well tuned your eyes and ears are of course.

Traditional wind up Metronome

I also have an old fashioned pyramid shaped wind up job. It never needs batteries, and has a great big arm that clangs from one side to the other at various speeds.

Against:

It's big, so not as easy to carry around. It's also a great way to make enemies of anybody in earshot.

For:

You just can't can't miss it. It will clang and clank over just about anything - and the bell at the start of each bar is way easier to pick than the tone change on the electronic version. The arm is of course also far bigger than its electronic cousin - so even from the corner of your eye (if you're reading music for instance) it's there in a way that the other one isn't.

I've never really grown to love the electronic one, although it clearly has its uses. So it might be worth trying out a few options before you buy and see how you get on with them.

Good hunting.

Cheers,

Chris
